750K front brake - another source of mushiness
« on: February 16, 2006, 11:55:25 AM »
After the K8 restoration, although the front caliper piston had a wee bit of corrosion, I couldn't resist trying it on for a test ride.

Good news - no leaks. Bad news - lever pulls back all the way to the grip with 20% stopping power. Pinched the brake hose near the caliper steel line - lever now hard as a rock. So we are down to something amiss in the caliper, and it wasn't air or pad running clearance.

Noticed that on brake application the rotor was being forced sideways maybe 5 thou. Loosened the 3 caliper to fork bolts, rotor movement is gone but lever still soft.

Read the forums, scratched the noggin, and made black brain clouds. Finally it came - the fender bracket was between the caliper hinge bracket and fork - it looks perfectly OK assembled, but an inconspicuous picture in a manual says not.

Put the hinge to the fork direct, problem solved. Not that any of you would make this mistake, but one of your DPO's might have.

Still looking for a piston.

wow, thank you so much for posting this.

i went through the exact same process on a 75 CB550 K1.

new lines, new brake pipe, new bleeder, new piston seal, master cylinder rebuild. and nothing but mushy spongy nothing. no power. disheartened and depressed, i browsed the forums for any other possible solution, and found this.

swapped positions and sho nuff, better then ever. I feel 10x safer. silly mistakes.

i just finished fixing up a '78 750F and the only real problem left is a real mushy front brake - even though it's had no shortage of attention.

i'm not sure if what you've done applies... but i'd like to check.  problem is, i'm not sure i understand what you're describing.

what should i be looking to check/adjust?

I got my pistons for my K7 from the UK (bikers-cafe I think), I'll dig up my invoices in the next few days and give more details.
