Listen to your radio and set your timing !

This has got to be one of the best dodges ever, if your running points I know this works but its pobably good for electronic ignition as well.
To check the static timing, take off points cover get any radio, idealy set to AM and tune it to no station then place anywhere near points or coils and with ignition on turn over the engine until the firing mark alines.  At the instant the plug fires you hear a "pop" on the radio! The pop should happen as the marks aline, if it does not then reset the points and try again. So now you can look at the mark and hear the "pop".  Makes it dead easy to set the points, and no need to mess with any wiring.

Is that why they call it "static" timing?

Not only is that a cool tip, it's also a McGuyver move that would be sure to impress.  "Timing's off?  Get me an AM radio and a can of beer." ;D

That method is not new.
It has been around since at last 1969 or earlier.
You forgot to mention the portable radio should be AM.

Does anybody still listen to AM stations?

I don't think I have an AM receiver lying around anymore...

My kids insist on listening to the Disney Channel and it is on AM.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
