Facebook, ok so I'm out of touch, but
« on: July 19, 2010, 07:27:06 AM »
I don't get it.
Signed up for it a few days ago and a bunch of people I don't know invite me in.
Kinda like visiting in the southeast USA. Seems freiendly but will people buy from
my website?

Sons filled me in yesterday.
"Oh, I said"
Guess I do not do enough daily to keep 'friends' posted.  ::)

I think I've made two status updates in the year that I've been on Facebook. :D  I pretty much only use it as an email service and occasionally to look at pictures of what some of my old friends are up to.

I'm right in the demographic "sweet spot" for FB, but it still took me a while to get into it.  Actually, it wasn't until my in-laws of the older generation really got into that i was able to adopt the whole thing.  It's a great way to keep family posted on stuff (will hopefully replace the Christmas-update letter...), she pictures, etc.

It's also nice when old friends you've lost touch with for years find you and you can catch up a bit.  If you don't want to talk to them, just ignore them.

Really, when it comes right down to it, it's like any other message board we use, but with fancy features and the ability to see posts from only the people you know.

That all said, it's really not for everybody.

Limited myself to accepting "friends" that actually know and have or had a close relationship with in the past. Happily I have caught up with people I befriended 30-40 years ago.
Spend many a happy hour "catching up" with them. And strangely enough with the really close friends we seem to have picked up where we left off all those years ago. Same humour, same personality etc.
There were a couple of people that I accepted as friends on FB and I never really exchanged any messagaes or anything for over a year so I just took them off my list.
Some folks I know have accumulated 500+ friends. WTF are you gonna do with 500+friends?? I reckon it's a status thing.
Or maybe it's a yoof thing.

Here's the thing...
Yes, there will be "friends" that feel the need to inform you of every little stupid thing they do during the day.  I have a couple like that - they must think they're rock stars or something.  I don't really care that they are 'walking the dog' or whatever.  At times (depending on how annoying the friend is), this can be a -.
Yes, you will get updates on your friends' farmville crops and other stuff you don't really care about.  That's a - (unless you play all the 'villes'.  And I'm sure there are some stay-at-home moms that really enjoy it, so I won't knock it.

Just remember, you don't have to read all that stuff.
And you don't have to inform everyone of your daily activities.  You are free to use it as you wish.

But...
I have been able to find people that I lost from long ago and rekindle the friendship.  Facebook makes it easy.  That's a +.
I have friended a few good folks that I have met recently - including a few of our forum members.  That's a +.
Many of my friends actually post things that are interesting.  That's a +.
I can flirt with all my old girlfriends.  That's a +.
I can post things to make people laugh.  That's a +.
In turn, some friends are naturally funny and reading their stuff puts me in a good mood.  That's a +.

Oh, and one other thing.  Your facebook page will probably be around long after you die.  So future generations will be able to see a little about the kind of person you are/were.

Imagine it George Washington had a fb page.
Imagine if Albert Einstein had one.
Imagine if Abraham Lincoln had one.
Imagine if your grandfather had one.
Or if your great, great, great grandmother had one.

So your future descendants may be glad if you participate.

I just used facebook to contact the previous owner of my bike.  His son is on there so I sent him a message, confirmed they did own the bike and sent them a video of it running and an update.

Matt, the previous owner was geeked.  Told me every modification done to the bike, some more of its history and thanked me for the message.  He used to run 12.90's on it back in the 70's when he ran it at the track.

Kinda cool, just from searching the name on the title I learned more about my bike, its history and made Matts day.

Yes, that's exactly right.  And I don't think people put much thought into their fb pages - I don't think they ever stop to think that these pages will be around for a long, long time.

But I think the first three people I listed as examples would have had the wisdom to realize this.  And I would hope the last two would too.  And I realize it, and I am very careful as to what I do on facebook, always with the thought in mind that what I write will survive long after I'm gone.    ;)

Nothing on FB is any more or less permanent than it is right here.  sure, you can delete posts here - but you can on FB as well.  And just because it is "deleted" doesn't mean that it's "gone" in either place.

The internet is just like being on camera or getting a: don't say anything that you wouldn't want remembered forever.

Well you got that right!   ;D

But not only future descendants.  Maybe we should be concerned about future employers.  Or maybe current employers.  Sure, we can say that we wouldn't want to work for someone that would judge us by our facebook page, but the truth is we live in a real and imperfect world.

And sure, we can delete what we write here and there, but really, who does that?  Plus, let me know just before I die so I can start deleting.   ;D

I'm not trying to be preachy here; I'm just sayin'.

Well...this is what privacy settings are for.  I don't let other people's tagging of photos of me be searchable, and nothing on my page is visible to anyone who's not on a certain sub-list of friends.  Then, I periodically google my name on both standard search and image search - thus far, the most that I've ever found is my profile pic, which isn't even a photo of me.

It sounds like you don't want to take my advice about simply watching what you do because you already would have a monumental task cleaning it up.   ;)

By the way, anyone at any time can see my fb profile.  I purposely keep it that way.  The only thing I'm concerned with as far as privacy settings is that I don't want to make it too easy for someone to rob me.  So I keep my photos (of all my toys) private to only friends of friends.

And how discerning are your friends with who they "friend" on facebook?

Heh.. well, despite what soichiro might think ( ;D), I'm fairly darn careful about what I put on there in the first place - and the people that can see the most stuff are family and old, close friends.  As for who they friend *shrugs* who cares?  Those people can't see my page.

Sure, there are loopholes anywhere, but my system has worked very well.  I don't have to stress about it at all - settings are set and good to go.  The google check isn't something I do often (once or twice a year) and is more to cover non-FB stuff as well.
