Source for NOS OEM Ignition Switch - '77 CB550F
« on: July 17, 2010, 09:55:32 AM »
Anyone have a dependable source for: NOS OEM Ignition Switch for a '77 CB550F??? Evidently fits several other Hondas.

I have a new Emgo coming - all I could find - knowing they ain't very good. So, I view it as a "temporary fix".

TwoTired said old switches can be rejuvinated [unless heat damaged] but I don't know if I can accomplish it.

Thanks guys

Hey Gaither- no dependable sources for OEM switches. You'll just have to sit on ebay for a while.

I've got to get to the task of rebuilding my OEM switch too. Maybe I'll take it apart before I go to work and take some pictures? I took apart my handlebar switches and rebuilt them. How hard could the ignition switch be  ::)?

Pics of the ign sw internals would be great. I don't even know how to get into the switch.
I might / might not be able to do it. I tinker but my shade tree ain't very tall.

I'd appreciate your help.

Finally got a bit of time - gonna get the plug off the ign sw and inspect that part of it.

One thing I did find. a 22 cal bore brush works great to clean fuse holders. Easy and shines 'em up like new [where the fuse snaps in]. TwoTired pointed me to clean 'em. They were tarnished and had a tiny bit of corrosion. Maybe this'll help me some!

Thanks much

I just rebuilt one of the switches I found in my spares collection and took pictures during the process.  Took about an hour.

I don't know if I can get to making a rebuild document until Monday or Tuesday, though.  I've got competing activities for the weekend.

I'll probably post it in the tips and tricks forum.  Maybe it can be a FAQ submission, too.

I didn't think it wasn't all that difficult, though.  Just need to be cautious with the force imparted with the screwdrivers.

Cheers,

Great, TwoTired

I'd love to see 'em. I have no idea how to get into the ign sw nor what is inside it. The few times I've attempted this sort of thing, I get springs and parts flying everywhere and wonder if I found 'em all and where they might go.

I Cleaned the fuse clips and have the ign sw off - description on my original post - which you contributed to.

Sounds like you have a busy weekend.

Hey TT, i'd also like to see that. I tried to fix my original switch but obviously my sodering (sp?) wasn't up to par...connection broke off again about a week later. Anything to avoid putting EMGO parts on the bike is worth the effort.

You ain't very encouraging - as I sit here with a new Emgo ign sw in my hand!

I think I'll go ahead and install the Emgo. The orig ign sw looks OK externally, after I cleaned the connectors. When TT comes back maybe I can learn how to check it internally. And, I don't know if it is bad or not. It is just "suspect".

I took my switch apart today too, but I have yet to post my pictures. There really isn't very much to the electrical contact side of the switch. The bottom connector pulls out somewhat easily, but I recommend this be done in a plastic shopping bag or the like to contain the ball bearings that may shoot across the room, never to be seen again.

I only did a cursory look at the switch contacts, but it looks like it's worn down quite a bit. Pictures tomorrow...

'Can't wait to see the pics. The bearings flying is what I expected. Makes me wonder if I'd ever get it back together!

Mine looks great externally - no indication of heat damage. And, I don''t know it's bad. It is just "suspect".

I put the new Emgo on Sat so I can ride. Hope to Make sure the orig sw is OK and reinstall it.

Sure like to find an NOS, OEM switch.

Thanks

You can get one for a GL1000 or a cbx1000 but expect to pay over $150

Your Instructions & pics are great!

Only diff externally in your sw and mine it that yours has 2 release tabs - mine has 3. I may find some diff in the internals [?]. I'll let you know. [May not get to do it today - got a "honey do" list.]

Many thanks for your help and all your trouble for us.

Jerry

Yeah, but I'm still looking. They always said if I drowned, they'd find my body 2 miles up-stream!

I knew I was in trouble when the local Honda dealer wanted to sell me an Emgo sw!

TT beat me to it Gaither. My problem is that I'm missing the outer plastic cover, and the inner plastic has three tabs broken off of it.

Looks like I'll be trolling Ebay.

I believe that the covers you see listed on EBay will fit. The 550F uses the same switch as the 750F. Comparing the pictures of the covers on EBay to the one in my hand they APPEAR identical.

I have a EMGO switch coming, too.  I am going to use one magnetic switch as per Hondaman suggests for switches.  I think that may work.   I'll see how it goes. BTW the bike is a 77 CB550K.

Fun with these ol' Honda CB's!

Are we having fun yet? But ya gotta love 'em anyway.

haven't had time to break the cover while attempting to remove it - but I will! That's exactly why they sold the covers separately.

Thanks guys -
