Is $200 for a fairly clean pair in 18"/16" with a 550 hub a good deal? Includes speedo drive, front disc and rear drum parts.

Yep.... ;)

I don't think this thread will effect the value of Lester Wheels.  If anything it shows how many people actually have them and that they weren't that exclusive in the 1970s.  Yamaha was the one that copied the Lester Wheel as seen on the Daytona posted earlier.

Yes Lester did make 18 inch front wheels as well (hard to read but any of the part numbers that end in 23 are 18" fronts).

Back in 1979 or 80 I bought a 550 K3 with Lester's, (had 3 at the time, F1, F2, K3)
Sold it because I didn't like wheels (still don't)

Too bad that Lester wheel post doesn't show the Honda sizes available.

Nope, they're 18 and 16. I oughta snap 'em up, but I'm just not crazy about them.

Maybe its just my math, but does not a new Excel rim, and Buchanan,s SS spokes rip up most of a 300 Dollar bill..??

 not counting the labour..

Oh yea, my 550 for example, new mandap rims from Buchanan shipped bare to me 150 ea 50 ship. Powder coated then shipped back to Buchanan with hubs $60ship then SS spokes $106ea and lacing $97ea then shipped back to me $60. So the wheels altogether cost me $876 plus tubes and tires. I have what looks like stock wheels at stock weight. If I went for excel or sun rims I would have spent another 100ea. My price doesn't include the cost of powder coat. The cost was/is never the deciding factor. I wanted SS spoked wheels with black rims and hubs, now I have them.

I just had Buchanan do another set of wheels for my 450 project. Their quality is secnd to none.

Joe I for one would never rip on a guy for purchasing what he wants. Its not like you could just go out and make one for $800... The 18" wheel is UNOBTANIUM. 16s and 17s all day long. Because thousands were sold but not as many people bought the 18s that fit 400 and 500/550. I LOVE rare hard to find stuff. Stock is over rated in my book. I buy parts for months and even years some times before I build something because I have an Idea. YOUR idea is worth it and the finished project will be one of one. GO FOR IT!
Exclusivity has its price!!!!

Well.....sometimes you have to pay to play.  Once reason why the price went so high for the rear wheel is becaseu I wan't the only one that wanted it.  It IS possible the owner was "shill bidding" to drive the price up....but I had the right to stop bidding at any time.  16" rear lesters are avaialble...18" 550 rear lester are not.  Nobody wants to sell the rare stuff....and when you do find one.....you either pay or live without it.

I have gotten grief over this wheel purchase, and I have caught grief over the tank and seat purchase.  Fact is.....somethings are DESIREABLE, and RARE.  As such, if you want them, chances are someone else wants them too.....and you have to pay to have them.  I remember a '69 chevelle 396 I almost bought 20 years ago for 3500 bucks.  23 years ago I sold my factory 409 Impala for 4K.....same car, same condition TODAY 30K!  Everybody wants the desireable stuff.....look at '69 Camaros.....

From the pics, I was able to dedcuct that the brake plate on the wheel is the exact one on my bike.  I looked at some 16" wheels and the brake plate was MUCH bigger!  As far as the front wheel, 750's have a bigger rotor, but mounting points are the same.  Width should be the same as well.  If not, you can trim the spacers down a bit and you're golden.

I just wish guys could let the COST thing go and just enjoy the hobby. Whether it is just a disagreement as to what something is "worth" in their eyes, or some form of sour grapes....I don't know.  I like this forum alot, and always ensure to document my work and add alot of pics...to make the forum that much better, add reading enjoyment to all....and most importantly help the next guy out.  If the crap shoveled at me gets too thick then "I will pick up my toys and go play elsewhere".  I'd rather everyone just act like men, and let ME worry about the cost.

Rant off.  ;D

I am thinking..
If Lesters were being made today..
 At least 900 bux a set...probably more..

They are a 2 pc wheel, welded together, and x-rayed, or similar tested..

Look way too much like Yamaha XS500/650/750/850/et.al. (7 spoke, H section)
I got a pair (19F,16R) I'll sell for $800.00, even have choice of disc or drum rear  ;D

(not mine but I got wheels like them)
 Here's a cheaper one (but it's in Hawaii  ;))

I know this is an old topic, but you guys are pretty knowledgeable on the subject.  I found a set of Lester wheels from a 750 w/rear disc setup.  19 front, 18 rear.  Is there anyway to make them work on my 75 550k.  Here is the thread I started.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

btw...if it doesn't work out on the lester's...and you wanted to unload them...I'd be interested.
