How to remove bearings from hubs?
« on: December 26, 2006, 07:10:01 AM »
Help! Can get the bearing covers to come  off.

I'm also doing the hubs but am having one Hell of a time getting the bearings out. The bearings are covered with a screwed on cover which has been peened in four places to keep it from backing out. So far, I have only one  of these covers off. The rest are stuck in place.

I went to my local Honda dealer and he let me use his Honda Special tool to get the one off, but he didn't have the special tool for the other bearings. He suggested that I chisel the covers off and then buy new covers.

Anyone have any suggestions?

In this picture, you can see the four indentations from peening the cover in place. There are two slots where the special tool goes into the cover to screw it off....

2 of the 3 covers came off for me by just using a screwdriver in one of the grooves and tapping it out (rotating the screwed in cap).  The other one wouldn't budge.  I used a cutting wheel, and cut almost through the stuck one in 2 spots across from each other, then pryed inwards on the cover to snap the cover in half.

With about a 1/4" drill, drill a shallow hole at the punch marks.
Make a tool: get soem 1/4" steel bar or plate and cut out a piece about 4 incehs long and exactly the width that matches the diameter of the retaining ring.
File or hacksaw the metal as shown in the diagram.
Check the fit, the tool should centre in the hole, and the corners should engage the drive slots fully.
Clamp the ti\ool in a vise with the filed end pointing up.
Set the hub (whole wheel if attached) onto the tool carefully and make sure it's in properly.
Press down hard (a helper is good) and turn the hub counterclockwise.

Good suggestions. I have mills, lathes, saws, etc here at home and will just make a removal tool and use some MAPP gas to heat the hub a bit. Hopefully it'll come out.

Thanks guys!

I drilled out the "stakes" with a 1/8" drill down to a depth of 1/8". Also made up a bar(s) for the retaining rings, with tabs for the ones that use flat tools, and screwed-in 1/4" bolts for the retainers that use holes. They turned right out.

Driving the brearings (at least the first one) out takes patience. A long blunt drift with sharp edges; tapping opposite sides in turn, through the axle spacer on the inner race, until it drops out. Support the hub firmly.

I didn't have a long enough drift for the CB750F rear wheel. So I made one out of 1/2" mild steel rod. Bearings were due for replacement anyway.  ;D

Mountainbikes need a tool to remove the rearsprockets (gears) from the hub, I used that tool for it. It has two little pins on an adjustable beak. You can probably buy it at any bicycleshop for a few dollars.

Sure! I'm in Indy, if you're in the area, let me know.
