I bet the intake valve broke then beat the piston to death and let parts come up the intake.   And down in the case for that hole.

That's what mine looked like when I broke the valve. Plus I had pieces of piston in my exhaust too. Parts engine now.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Imagine flying along in your airplane and the engine starts making really awful noises and shaking the plane violently, I mean shaking so bad that when you glance out the window you see the wing tip flapping up and down 1 or 2 feet.  This is what happens when your 360 Cu In 4 cylinder becomes a 3 cylinder.
The autopsy revealed that the exhaust valve broke off and banged on the piston and cylinder until it was bent and small enough to fit down the exhaust track.  Found the remains in the muffler.
But, I was "lucky".  It didn't hole the piston, allowing the rest of the engine to survive and drag the well shaken cabin occupants bake to a safe landing.

No.  Those are illegal to install on this (most) aircraft.

You'd hate working on certificated aircraft, 754.  You can't change anything about the design but paint color.  Even then, you have to have a weight and balance calculation added to the maintenance log and have government certified sign off.

Jerry, that's not a piston, that's a donut! 

I got down to getting the camshaft off and found something interesting. The intake rocker arm for cylinder 1 had the part that comes in contact with the lobe of the cam worn concave. I'll post pics tomorrow, I was in a bit of a rush today. Unfortunately I couldn't find the right tools to remove the part with the valves in it to see if my piston looks like Jerry's or not. So for now I'm still not totally sure what went wrong but I'm beginning to think Jerry and 650 are right and something went wrong and the valve punched a hole in the piston.

I wonder if the ticking noise I was hearing was the valve hitting the top of the piston? The biggest thing that confuses me about this all is the ticking noise went on for at least a hundred miles, more likely 200, so shouldn't I have felt a loss of performance or something before it went all fubar on me? Aside from the obvious "Brandon, pay attention to ticking noises, it's either mechanical failure or someone put a bomb in your engine" is this something I could/should have seen coming?

Mine didn't tick like a time bomb, it just went boom and locked up. Missed power shift to 2nd. VERY high revs. TOO high revs.

I think Brandon's internals are gonna be pretty impressive, considering the smashed engine case and bits of piston in the inlet port! ;D

Haha, sorry to make everyone wait to see the innards but I've been focused on getting the spare engine in the bike and getting her running and rideable again. I'm afraid it may be a few more days before I can open her up, but when I do I promise as many and detailed of pics as my little camera will take :)

Re your 100 mile tinkling noise Brandon, these 650's will show very little drop in performance when running on only 3 cylinders especially when the throttle is wide open, that means a snapped off inlet valve head could have been dancing all over your #1 piston all that way. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Man last time I saw damage like this I was working on a 3406E CAT diesel engine in a Kenworth tractor.  The guy spun a cam bearing dropped 3 valves in 3 different cylinders and just kept going.  Needless to say it was a wonder that it ran at all.  Even though he said he stopped driving it as soon as it happened, his engine computer told me different, it showed me that he over revved the engine 12 hours before he brought it to the shop (I love computers). ;)

Anyway back to the topic at hand, I'm just as curious as everyone else to find out what happened.

Ok, so I changed my plans and won't be leaving till tomorrow morning. I REALLY wanted to try riding my bike with the replacement motor in it, so I did  ;D  When I got back I tore into the top of the engine to see what the verdict was.... it was as bad or worse than I had thought.
