Last time i saw something like that a bloke left a 3/8 drive 12mm socket on a big end nut----made a big bang when he tried to start it!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Haha, I don't think that was it since I've put well over a thousand miles on the thing since i got it back together.

As requested I'll be tearing the engine apart at some point to see what went wrong and what is salvageable.

I only had a chance to pull the left side valve cover on my spare engine, but the condition was encouraging. There was oil in the top end and everything was shiny and looked good. The outside needs a good cleaning as there are pine needles and dirt everywhere, and some of the case paint is peeling (since the cases are aluminum, this is just a cosmetic issue right?) With any luck it will be as easy as doing a tune up and an oil change and she'll be good to go.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I should look at/for before putting the engine in the frame? I'd really like to avoid putting it in and having to take it out again if at all possible. Can I do a compression check with the engine out of the frame?

Only by hand, if it turns over OK without any sticking and feels the same coming up to every compression you are 50% there

Shove that sucker in your frame Manji, (the other one has to come out anyway, it's only a paperweight now) give it some fresh oil and a new filter, check and adjust your valve clearances, ignition timing, cam chain tension etc, spray a little light oil or WD40 down each spark plug hole, install new plugs, and hit the button! I would leave the valves alone, and the cam-chain adjuster,(don't fix it unless it's broke) and the oil,(change it and the filter as soon as you get a handle on how, or if, it runs) just check the static timing to make sure you will get a spark, and start her up!! Good luck!!

In the frame is best IMO as well, a little WD in the cylinders, clean and gap the plugs, check valve clearances, and all that.


One thing extra I like to do beyond the initial oil and filter change is once again chenge oil and filter, IF she runs, and after 50-100 miles to clear out any gunk that may have been dis lodged by the freshly circulating oil in a recently dead motor.
Don't forget to drop the oil pan BEFORE the first oil change to get any sediment out.

Here is what I found when I removed the carbs. The metal bits were all the way through the carbs and back into the pods. At this point I'm thinking this just went from a rebuild to a salvage whatever wasn't buggered and go from there. I'll be splitting the cases at some point in the near future I hope. The main goal over the last few days was trying to get my spare engine tested, installed and running.

Yeah, I hope it's just some sort of one in a million fluke occurance, and not something I did   ::)  However it does explain the box of broken glass sound I heard when i hit the starter to see if it was siezed. In a very sad, morbid sort of way, I'm really looking forward to opening this baby up and seeing what went wrong.

Yup, she's a runner, but is smoking out all 4 pipes. I posted a separate thread for that, I figured I'd keep this one for the buggered engine. I'll post pics once I crack her open. Hopefully it's not too bad, but from all the metal bids I'm afraid it will look like a grenade went off in the engine. Oh well, I've always wanted to tear one completely apart, guess I have a really good reason to now.

Now thats a new one on me cos i never seen bits in the intake that wernt thrown in the carb by somebody, in the exhaust yes after a piston break up.

There is something very odd here, we need lots of pictures of stripdown to put in the memory archive to frighten new people with!

Total prank pic, now that I looked at it again :D.... maybe the whole thread is a prank... shock, horror ( wouldn't be the first one ! ).
The carb 'disintergrated' and got sucked in to the the intake manifold?? Any malfunction would get blown out the exhaust end of the motor.. very strange !?
We were all sympathising lots until this pic.!!

Spanner1, man I wish this was a prank pic, and it was all just my bad sense of humor, but sadly tis all fact. I'm as puzzled as the next person at how all the bits ended up on the intake size with very little on the exhaust side.

OH, btw, that's actually after I brushed a small amount out to see it closer. And I take exception to being called a lier Spanner  ;)  Ok, not really, as it really seems incredible and unlikely that this kind of thing would happen. But oddly enough, a quick blow out of the carbs with some carb cleaner, a good washing of the air filter to get the metal bits that puked back into there and the carbs work on the new spare motor.

So as  i'm pondering what could have caused this a thought struck me, could this have been caused by putting a hole in my piston first?

Damn! Beat me by a few seconds, but yeah, that's what I was gonna say, if the intake valve was gone, the inlet tract becomes the path of least resistance, as it were.  ;D
