cb750 throttle sitff
« on: July 24, 2010, 04:54:48 PM »
My cb750 is coming along and running nicely.  However my throttle seems uncomftably stiff. Not at first but after a good 10-20 miles my wrist is aching from holding it open/twisting.  The cables are brand new and without being looped into the push/pul on the carbl are smooth and easy with no binding.  On the carbs the spring/throttle is pretty stiff and I can barley move it by hand.  Is there an adjustment there?  Lube?  Or am I just a weak fish.  6"3 218lbs....so I dont think its me?

What year is the bike?
My 78 has a very stiff spring also. The carbs are not the CV type they are the older manual piston type.
You can put some lithum grease in the throttle tube on the handle bars to help some.
I almost wonder if there is a way to take some of the pressure off the spring.

I'll ask around and post any other ideas that I get.

6'3" 218?  I think it might be you. ;D ;D

Seriously, try the lube on the throttle tube, and get some Dri-Slide cable lube.  But first, does you bike have a throttle lock screw?  It would be on the bottom of the handlebar throttle assembly where the cables enter.  The screw will be in between the two cables.  And more of a knob than a screw.  If you have one, make sure it is not tightened at all.

I got this reply from a friend...

Oh common issue. Not much you can do but some have tried different springs but it is a crap shoot finding one that fits.

What I have done is lube the shaft as it goes through the carbs. With your cables, are they honda or motion pro? If new honda, supposedly they should not be lubed as they have a teflon liner. Motion pro do not.
Lube is needed. What seems to work is a tennis ball cut in half and a hole drilled in just big enough to seal around the cable. Fill with a little oil and hang up. the oil will seep through and lube the cable. Kinda messy but does a good job. Might help a bit.
My throttle was so easy to turn after I did this I only needed 2 fingers. That was 2 years ago and needs to be done again though.

the cables are motion pro.  They are brand new.  I think its the spirng more than anything else since even by hand the carbs are stiff to move.  I'll prob just have to get use to it but it puts a damper on any long rides.  BY the time I get to work mt wrist is a aching.  I'll try lubing the hell out of everything and see how that works for now thanks for the replies and advice.

I'll take a good look at mine and see if there is a way to back the spring pressure off without totaly tearing the carbs apart. I'll let you know tomorow afternoon or nite....

I had the same problem with mine, I made a new bracket to change the spring tension.

Another option is to change the hand grips.  Big fat hand grips should give more leverage then the narrow 'Rollo' sized ones currently in style.
