bike started now it wont....
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:06:09 PM »
Hey guys, I have 76 750F and after putting it all back together bc the PO had it disassembled I got it to start last night.  Bike wouldn't idle and fell flat on its face whenever throttle was closed....still a great night bc i finally got it started.  Anyhow this morning tried to start it and it would not turn over.  battery was charging all night and the fuel was turned off during the night.  So my question is what possibly could have changed since last night?  I tried adjusting the idle after frosty helped me last night to try to get it to idle but no success.  i read that the stock idle set point was halfway between seated and loose, anybody has any verification on this?  Other than maybe the idle point being wrong im out of ideas  ???

I wish there was a 'standardised' use for common terms used to describe stuff!
by the term ' wont turn over' do you mean A. when the starter button is pressed, nothing happens or B., when the button is pressed, the motor spins but does not fire/start ( wrong usage, but common! ).. ?? If A. then look at the battery connections for shiny and the battery ground connection to the frame, also tap the solenoid while pressing the start buttom... if B. then different answer!
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Ok lets trouble shoot it then
1. Check the spark on all cylendars.
2. Make sure you are getting gas into the carbs. open the drains to make sure gas is in the bowls.
3. Spray some carb cleaner or WD-40 onto the carbs and try cranking it to see if it runs with it.

thanks guys, after charging the battery it did fire back up.  I'm guessing that I drained the battery trying to start it and it just made things worse.  now to the idle problem... :(

Not that I really know much yet, I'm about a month ahead of you but a big issue I ran into was vacuum leaks around the carb boots.  Make sure they are nice and tight, those old Honda clamps go to crap.  West Marine has nice stainless clamps that are near identical

Warm the engine up and then start setting the idle. The hot idle is different than the cold idle.
Make sure all pipes are getting hot.

I hope lots of future posters see this ( not likely ) !..... " Wont turn over = no crankshaft turning "...... not 'won't fire/run.. thank you all  ???

would not having exhaust or headers installed affect back pressure enough to mess with the idle of the bike?

Yes . You need exhaust and air filter in place before you can set up carbs .
Run through all the tune up points : valve clearance ,timing , good plugs , ect . Carbs are the last thing to set up . There is a link to manual downloads at the top of the forum page this post is on . Follow the tune up list in the manual . If you still have problems then we can start to troubleshoot the problem .
