Outdrives are foreign to me, (Inboard driver), but I'll go with SS being good, along with brass.

Don't know what is is, but you most likely want the new one to be stainless...

My guess is at some time over the years, the owner failed to replace the zincs on the leg.  The "pipe/line" was the easiest target for electrolysis.

This is good info from that link, pull the prop of and have a good look at it. They are cheep!
 "Propellers are normally protected by a zinc collar fashioned in two pieces and bolted together around the shaft forward of the propeller. It is essential to make sure the shaft is clean and bright before clamping the collar to it. Corrosion protection for outboard and outdrive propellers is typically provided by a bolt-in-place zinc ring or a zinc prop nut."

There will  usually be another one on the horizontal fin to protect the leg and components.

If their daughter can't hook you up, there's an outboard wrecking place on Foster betweeen 82nd and 205 that would be a good place to start looking...if you wanna go cheap...

All freshwater here ... no need for sacrificial zinc.... btw,  + 1 million on never starting your engine 'dry' or ( IMO ) with one of those 'water ears' that sit over the water intake... boat backed into the lake/river/ ocean minimum to start motor.... or serious damage fast

Used a "Fake-a-Lake" a few times, and a running hose plugged right into the raw water intake hose other times.  Never had a problem as long as the revs never got too high.  Eight years on.

I mean, yeah, don't rev it to the moon in the driveway with a hose hooked up, but for idling, no biggy.  The raw water pump ain't pulling that hard.

(Fresh-water-only here too.  This "anode" stuff is above my paygrade.  No towboats certified for saltwater.)

I have used the "dry dock" hose adaptors for 25+ years with no problems.
Not sure why you had issues    Could have been something else and it just happened at that time.

Yeah, just I've seen too many idiots trying to start their 2-stroke ( not that that matters ) outboards 20 feet above the water after a winter season of neglect before they back'em into the water.... the water pump impeller disintergrated way before the boat was launched

The Columbia is tidal, not sure how far up the salt comes, or how far down the POs took the boat, even out in the ocean would be easy from here......a serious freshwater washdown is a good idea everytime you haul it out no matter what water you use it in...

Well that's just dumb.  I never start up until the pickup is in the water.

Well O.K. on the water ears.... luckily I'm 1 mile from the boat dock and any engine 'tweaking' can be tested in the lake in 5 minutes

there is a zinc fin above the prop that appears to be in good shape, though it seems that bad shape would indicate bad things..

regardless of whether or not this boat has seen saltwater, there is clearly some electrolytic corrosion going on. i'll check out other parts for problems tomorrow.

We've been out all evening w/ friends, so I'm just getting to this. Funny thing we were just up the street from the shop (EastBurn- 17th & Burnside. Great food, BTW) and I seriously thought about driving by to see if you'd bought anything! Sounds like everything worked out very well. Projects that start out with good karma usually fare well.

Anyway, I have no idea what that particular piece is called other than a hydraulic junction block(?) I'm sure somebody will have one. Those outdrives are super common.

I agree, you should check the zinc anodes & replace if necessary. ALL boats ground themselves to the hull, so even in freshwater they produce electrolysis (although, salt water certainly speeds up the process).

HELL YEAH- let's see if we can get it wet this weekend! I'll give you a call tomorrow and set up a time to meet you @ the shop.

(Hope that all made sense. I think we might have done a little more drinking than eating @ dinner)

you may get lucky at Harvey Marine in Aloha. Or you may not. but, they've been there for a long time and have older boats sitting there for sale. they may at least be able to point you in the right direction.

That new zinc fin might be because the old one got eaten up and they just didn't get around to replacing (or noticing) other affected parts..

I'll be there in the morning buying the random stuff that didn't come with it... depth/fish finder, anchor, marine-tex, etc. i'll call around for that part, but if i can't find it i'll have them order it.

grnrngr- the zinc fin doesn't look too new, actually. i talked to the the seller after that last post, and he seemed to think that the other zincs he came across looked good. we'll see, i suppose..

marine-tex over fiberglass patching... the seller was doing the fairing. apparently the PO had done the glasswork. it feels much more solid than the surrounding areas. i'll be finishing this tomorrow and patching a couple small holes in the transom, like where the fuel line ran to the outboard motor:

One of the most important items for people on the water...Don't forget plenty of SUNSCREEN!!!  and once you get that fitting replaced, the only work you should need to do would be to bolt on a turbocharger..    I have a danforth anchor you can have if you want, I'm gone all day today, but I could get it to you sometime tomorrow..along with the anchor, you need about 3-6 feet of chain and about 50 feet of anchor line (there are no "ropes" on a boat)...

Really neat!  I like the old boats.

The paint is worn off on the edges of the steering wheel!  That old girl has some serious nautical miles on her!

The hull repair scares the crap out of me though.
