Agreed.

Tell him you are interested in the boat, but not sure on the price. Let him know how far you have to drive and you don't want to wast time & gas if he is super firm on $1500.

Also ask him if he'll be able to run it for you. A hydraulic trim pump is really not too much different than a power steering pump on a car- you can still run the engine for a minute or so and not do any damage. All it really controls is lifting & lowering the outdrive.

If you take your truck, make sure your hitch matches the one on his trailer (Duh.) Check the bow for impact damage and the transom, motorwell & floor for dryrot.

Fiberform was in business from the late '50's or early 60's and they made decent boats. Not top of the line, but not the bottom, either. Our 28' is a 1979 Fiberform and I've had it 10 miles or more offshore. I think they got bought out by Bayliner in the '80's.

Wow.... ;D  I have been 50-60+ miles offshore in boats almost half that size, the 18 footer in question looks like an old Caribbean, they were good solid boats and would easily go even further out in the right conditions.....I have been over 150 miles out in a 33 footer..

JP- thanks again.. i did tell him on the phone that it was over my budget, and he said nothing of being flexible on the price. i will ask him before going out. good call on asking about the ball hitch.

retro- i play drums in this band. i have built a few studios, but the one we are in right now is very nice. 2" analog tape machine with pro tools automation, and pretty much top of the line on all the outboard gear.. grey face universal audio tube compressors, etc. it's the first time we've recorded in town actually, and it's very nice to take a day off to record and not 2 weeks, not to mention sleeping in my own bed at night.

Well, you are on an Island, after all. Isn't everything offshore for you guys?  ;D

Paul: No problemo. Like I said, happy to help. Hmmmm, you don't seem angry enough to be a drummer, self-centered enough to be lead guitar or tortured enough to be singer. I would have guessed bass.

From one of Neil Peart's books:

What do you call a drummer who's just broken up with his girlfriend?

Homeless.

How do you know if the stage is level?

The drool comes out of BOTH sides of the drummer's mouth

How do you get a drummer off your porch?

Pay for the pizza.

i went to look at the hardtop. wow, i'm sold. it is really pretty in person. it runs and is in good shape, and the hull and transom are very solid. the people selling it have several boats, including a huge (60'?) sailbaot they are restoring. nice people, and they seem trustworthy. the trim pump in question has a blown line which could hopefully mean that the pump itself isn't bad. i'm going to look at one more tonight, but i think i'm sold on the fiberform.

i'm going to have to run on faith a little with this one, as they got it at an estate sale and haven't had it in the water themselves. the blower works, engine runs and outboard shifts, bilge pump, all gauges, etc. work, and the hull seems very solid. they have several other fiberform boats and swear by them because FF made their hulls so thick. anyway, for my price range i'll be taking a leap of faith almost no matter what i buy, and at least i can see most of this one function.

I had $1075 in my pocket, and they thought that a little low. he suggested $1300, and i suspect i could walk away with it for $1200. it's really about all i can do, considering that i'll still have to buy tags, etc. and safety equipment.

Thats still a good price Paul. In Australia boats never get that cheap because all our cities are coastal and boating is something most of the population takes part in in some way or another. Hope it all works out ok mate..

Now that you have one you are very keen on I will give you my last bit advice on buying a boat...... I have had 6 ::)

Don't do a leap of faith.

Boats are expensive if not working.  I actually had my speed boat sold many years ago. I told the guy I had not had it in the water for a season and if the engine was hooped he could back out.  WE took it to my mechanic to run it up and it was hooped. I gave the guy his money back right there!

Pay a boat mechanic $150.00- $200.00 to have a look. Could save you $1000.00s
Be patient ;)

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE... wait sorry, i still had my commandment voice on.  ;D

honestly, i'm not sure how much a boat mechanic would be able to tell me that wasn't too apparent. the engine was familiar enough (being an inboard) and ran. it idled fine and shifted fine. the hull and transom seem very solid. this guy had done a little fairing on the underside of the hull where it looked like the PO had run it upon the beach, but i knocked around and it sounds very solid.

i don't mean to suggest that your advice isn't sound, it's just that for a couple hundred dollars more, i could step up into another range and not need anything. anyway, i've always been a sucker for a fixer upper, and she sure is pretty (and doesn't need too much fixer-upping..).

we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Gotta concur with being patient, especially when it comes to Craigslist finds. My experience has been no matter what it is, soon as you buy it, the next day you'll see something better for less money. Thread started only 10 days ago, I'd be willing to bet you know a whole lot more about boats than when you started, but there's lots more to learn. Not to say this isn't a sweet deal, when I tried to view the ad it had expired, but CL is full of sweet (and sour) deals..
