Yeah, she is a nice one, and encouraging to see the word "new" used frequently...I'm more into sailboats so couldn't say about the price, but since you're out there comparing them, should be fairly obvious whether it's a "deal" or not. Trailer looks real nice and that's a substantial (but frequently overlooked) part of the deal as well, even tho it just sits most of the time. You've probably seen a few ads that say "trailer not included"..

yeah, the trailer has been stripped and painted, all four tires replaced, and the wheel bearings packed. no depth finder or radio, but it has custom rod holders, bait storage, and the seats fold down so you can lay on them! plus the dash looks like a '60's corvette.  ;D

I've got an old raytheon VHF (kinda bulky but "period correct") and a couple CBs if you need a radio..no antennas tho. Looks like it would make a great river camping/fishing boat, and I'd be willing to bet, if you get it, you'll end up skiing too... ;)

it has an antenna, actually, just no radio. "period correct" sounds perfect for this one!  ;D

Sweet.
So you were able to hear it run for a little bit? And shift into forward and reverse? No undue grinding or clunking?
When they ran it for you, was the outdrive in a bucket of water or did they just run it dry?
How did the steering feel?

There should have been a little plaque with mfg. information- on it it will give the year of manufacture, cargo capacity, etc.. it will also give the gross weight of the boat. Make sure it's something your truck will be able to tow. Does the trailer have brakes (surge or electric)-if so make sure they are not stuck on (unlikely, but it could happen.)

And, like I told you before- if you are sure this is the one, be prepared to spend some money. You will undoubtedly find things to fix the first time you take it out.

If you want, let me know when you are ready for her maiden voyage. I can follow you with our boat just in case. Remember, it's a long swim back to the dock if you break down.

And for god's sakes, once you get it running reliably, LEAVE THE ENGINE ALONE!!  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

The boat looks way cool.  I hope the deal happens.  If so, a couple small points.

The CL ad refers to a "throwable cushion".  Not any more.  The Coast Guard changed that about 10 years ago, and doesn't recognize those as PFDs.  Handy to have, but don't count them as PFDs.

I agree with using the "period correct" radio equipment.  I would suggest finding someone with radio knowledge and equipment for installation.  That antenna is an unknown.  A radio with age on it might be sensitive to a bad or incorrect frequency antenna, so care is advisable.

And having that extra outboard bracket is real handy.  I'd suggest finding a small used outboard "kicker" for that before too long.  As JP says, it can be a long swim back to shore.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

ha ha...  ;). you don't think i could squeeze a few more ponies out if it? what if i use a volvo top end on an OMC inboard and...  ;D

anyway, yeah it shifted cleanly and they ran it with a garden hose hooked up to it for a water supply. i didn't scrutinize the steering linkage well enough, but it seemed to work fine. that is top of my list to look at more before buying. it has a hookup for ez steer for when i get an outboard. that too is top of my list to buy.. something small- 5 HP or so.

Goddamit Kit, DON'T encourage him!!  :D

Paul: That EZ steer is really nice to have when trolling. 5-7hp should be just about right as a kicker for an 18' boat. You should be able to find an older one for about $250, less if you wait until the end of the season.

Well... IT'S MINE!

I gotit for $1200, and they gave me a $25 gift certificate (written on the back of a business card) to their daughter's marine supply store. Really nice people! I think knowing you are buying something from good people really makes the difference. I already located a trim pump intown for $75, but the guy with it thinks it's probably just the line.

It's at the shop if any of you portlanders want to come take a look! JP, I'd love if we could try to get it in the water Sunday, too..

Good score.

Been watching this one since I'm a boat owner and enthusiast, yet I'm not an "expert", so I never weighed in (I didn't think I was 'worthy' to weigh in).

Anyway, have fun with it and don't fall prey to the old "a boat is just a hole in the water you throw money into!" crap.

I've had my boat for years and it's FAR from a moneypit.

Just be smart and enjoy it.

Canoes and Kayaks don't count. :)

Just messing with you.  My little speed boat costs me nothing year after year either. It's just getting them to that point that takes a bit of work ;D

I won't.  Holy hell, that sounds painful...

It's just getting them to that point that takes a bit of work ;D

I bought my boat in 2002 and the only things done since then have been the belts, raw water impeller and oil changes.  Basic maintenance, as it were.  Gelcoat and vinyl are original and near-perfect, and the boat itself never misses a beat. Hell, I've put more money into MY boating gear (vests, wetsuits, skis) than I have the boat.

I guess I was lucky, but this winter, I'm putting some $$$ into it.  Engine mods for more power, along with a new prop.  Gonna rip after I'm done with it.

ok guys, getting started in the fun...

so , i don't think it's the trim pump or lines, but rather a part i can't find a description for in any diagrams online. on the bottom of the outboard is a little manifold that the power trim hydraulic lines come off of, and attach to through the hull. it looks like a brake line junction essentially (or any hydraulic line i guess), and appears to be the way that the lines are sealed through the hull. anyway, i pulled it and the metal that the lines attach to from above is disentigrated. it appears to have been cast iron and is corroded into oblivion. i called the guy with the trim pump, and though he didn't seem to know what part i was talking about, he thinks he'll have one as he has several outboards from the time period in and apart right now.

does anyone know what that part is called?

EDIT: jesus, what kind of environment do these parts spend their life in?? jeez...  ::)
