I think GoldWings are fantastic bikes.  My FIL has an 85 GL1200 and I think he really wants me to have it (he's long in the tooth for riding).  I just love the bike but sheesh my garage is full.  The surprising thing about them is how much torque they have (less RPM range than a CB750).  With fairings, you feel very protected.  With fairings off, it's a pretty neat looking bike.  They were originally intended to be racers but started to get fairings and bags and Honda just went with the flow.

I think you'd like it a lot.

saw this at a bike show this weekend.  A friend just picked up an 83 recently with just a windshield on it.  Have not had a chance to try it out yet but in the next 2 weeks or so I will.

I met a fellow, at a tech school in Raleigh, NC, in '82, who was the very proud owner of his 2nd Goldie; he had flat worn-out the first one. His name was Charlie Brown, (looked a bit like Andy Devine), and he was planning on retiring soon, so he and his wife could spend time and miles touring. He told me he routinely racked up 50K miles a year on his bikes!!!

I have two wings, An 81 GL1100 dressed and a 75 GL1000 Naked.

The dressed 81 is the bike the wife an I use for touring and we have done many thousands of comfortable miles (the seat I have is a Saddleman Roadsofa). It's not the fastest bike I've ridden but she moves pretty good and it doesn't matter if I ride single or two up with all the luggage for a couple of weeks of touring she still can accelerate up hill in high gear on the highway or cruise the back roads and hold her own in the twistys.

The 75 GL1000 a first year wing one of the first thousand ever made. Although a very similar bike to the 81, it thinks it's a crotch rocket and can really get up and run. The wife and I can ride comfortably but it's more fun alone.

Both of these bikes are heavy the 81 weighs in at a little over 800 lbs the 75 about 700 lbs but with engine and gas tank low they don't feel heavy unless you try to push one. One of my friends refers to them as a Hondapotumus.

My 75 550f is more fun to ride but the wing is my choice for any trip over 100 miles.
I say BUY IT ;D

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
I bought a 1975 Goldwing cheap in 1983, it had been thrashed unmercifully by the previous owner, and looked it. It had RD Yamaha mufflers welded to the Honda headers, horrible king/queen seat, ugly barn door fairing, etc etc.

I spent my $2K tax refund (back in the days when I used to get one) replacing the complete exhaust system, seat, paint, battery tires etc, then found out there was a major problem with the charging system. Replaced the alternator rotor and stator, regulator/rectifier, then the starter motor crapped out. This wing must have been built on a Friday, it was just one thing going wrong with it after another.

Sold it and bought a 1975 Kawasaki KZ900, which was a much better bike all round. I'm sure a "good one" would be a great long distance tourer though, as long as you stay on freeways with only long sweeping bends, and stay away from the twisties, they're not big on handling either. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Terry, in all fairness, how many miles were on that '75 'Wing when you bought it?

40,000 (ish) Km (25,000 miles) mate, but as I said, it hadn't been looked after. I'm not "knocking" Goldwings, but I have seen a lot of early wings in bits, so I'd never class them as "bullet proof" like I would a big Kawasaki or Suzuki of the same era. Cheers, Terry. ;D

They do need new timing belts. If it has not already been done, do it soon.

Well, it was a nice dream while it lasted !..... Sweetie was not enamored by the idea of another bike in the garage and swiftly reminded me about the 2 non-runners I have out there already ( K4, K8 750's). :( ...... Whispers; 'I'll try again later.'. ;)...).
