Topic: Tire question, should I be worried or ticked off?

Upon cleaning up my front rim, I noticed some light cracking on my sidewall. Tire has only been on the road for about a thousand miles.
Checked the manufacture date......3307 
Should I be ticked that I bought this tire less than a year ago??? I'm probably going to call the dealer I bought it from just to see what they will do, I wouldn't expect to go buy a tire off the shelf that is that old.  Problem is they are in NC and I'm over in OR now. They are nice guys and have hooked me up tremendously, but I doubt they are going to do anything with this.

FWIW & IMO Their tire supplier should make this up to him at no charge. Most tire dealers/sellers never check this code. Many may not evenknow about the code since it is in the Mfg's advantage that no one know about it.

Don't you owe it to yourself to at least try to get it righted? It is possible there is a Fed law against selling a tire after a certain age [?].

One thing for sure is a "new" tire over 3 or 4 years in storage will likely bust your butt on wet pavement. I got a set like this put on a Crown Vic BEFORE I new about the code. After about 12000 miles, you couldn't drive it in the rain. They got scary!

You get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. I work in retail. I am far more willing to bend as far as I can go if the customer is nice to me.

No one is more outspoken on this subject than I. Still at 3307, its not barely 3 yrs old yet. 6 years being the swing date for many and 10 years being the drop dead date.

If you don't plan on wearing it out before 10 years are up, you may have a case for a fresher tire. If you wear it out before 6 years, no harm no foul.

I agere with your sentiment though and everyone should be educated enough on the subject to check the date before buying the tire.

That is a little too old to be on the shelf. But once the dealer buys it they can't return it, so stocking tires is problematic especially for a small dealer.

I agree with MC its well within the the limits.  If you got it a year ago then it was 2 years old when installed.  Not really an issue as MC pointed out.  The way I would approach the vendor is with pics of the cracking, a copy of your recipt or order number, and a nice friendly "please help" tone rather than "You sold me a tire that was 2 years old and now I want something from you!".  The cracking is the issue not the DOT code.  Cracking = unsafe, DOT Code = within limits.
