I've heard people say I should get a new bike multiple times, and I have to admit I've thought about it a lot.  However, none of my friends on newer bikes get thumbs up from passers by, yells from random strangers waiting at traffic lights to get my attention about how much they like my bike, etc.  To add to that, for the type of riding I do, my new bike buddy's always say they are impressed with how fast my old bike goes.  I know it isn't the prettiest bike out there, so maybe I should just give it a fresh paint job... Nah.

Keep riding it.  Your bike is a classic that doesn't need to be the tops at anything because it just has character.

I could dig one of the new Triumphs.

But other than that I am all set :)
I love her. I love the blood and sweat I have poured in over the years. I love that no problem she might have is beyond me... usually I'm good with only the included toolkit. No expensive electronics failures, no meted plastic... no problems. Just a nice quiet idle and smooth acceleration up until I get chicken.

I borrowed my neighbors brand new CB750 in 1978 to skip school and go visit my girlfriend in a town 20 miles away.  I hit 110 mph on the way over.  It scared me because I had never ridden anything but a Kawasaki 90 on the street and I was still a year from getting my drivers license.  At 15, that sort of experience leaves a lasting impression.  Awesome old bikes.

I like quality and simplicity. These bikes have both.

I took a wrong turn in Vancouver and ended up riding by the Pan Pacific. 2 guys standing in front of a Ferrari were staring at me as I rode by, not the car.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a new Thruxton or a Bonne, just so I have something to ride when my old girl is down or needing some love.  I'm a new rider anyway... so when I can't ride like I want it kills me.
But in saying that... wouldn't trade her for the world.   ;D

I know, it's funny right?  It's just like if a Ferrari drove by, we'd know it wasn't your run-of-the-mill car just by the engine note from 3 blocks away.  In this case the shoe was on the other foot.  I guarantee when they heard you coming their ears perked up.

I tell them it's the bike that made all other bikes get better. Even your harley.

Riding the old bikes is always more fun too.  I love it after a day out riding with my friends and my "new" 1981 GL500 still gets better mileage than anything else and It's the older bike by atleast 15 years.  I can't wait until I get the 350F running solid again and can really have fun.

It's good to be different and if that's your style....stick with it. Getting something that old in proper running condition is gratification in itself. Everyone else is just jealous!  8)

This makes me think of Honda's cars.  Has anyone ever stopped to think back to what kind of mileage they were getting back in the 80s?  Example:  the '86 CRX HF model got 42/51.  And this wasn't some stupid hybrid.   Oh yeah, I hate hybrids.

The only time I get any negative comments is when I ride my 750's to work. I'm one of the older guys there and most the guys in the shop are in there 20's or early 30's. Pretty much there just joking around with the old man (me) and trying to give me a hard time. One of the young guys ask me one day if that old bike was steam powered or was it foot propelled like the Fred Flintstone car. I couldn't help but chuckle a little and I said hey that's pretty good I hadn't heard that one before and than I told him, son this is what a real motorcycle looks and sounds like and when I started it and he heard the inline four purring and the sound of the HM300's his mouth dropped and he grinned from ear to ear. Can I take it down the road he said, Uh, NO I said and I grinned and I walked away. I got him ;D ;D
