pods vs stacks?
« on: September 24, 2011, 10:38:39 PM »
PO ditched the airbox on my cb500 and stuck some pods on the carbs. I've read the many pods vs airbox threads, but I haven't seen one on the subject of pods vs velocity stacks.
Can someone enlighten me on the benefits of velocity stacks over pods?

Velocity stacks have actual potential to increase your engines performance by increasing airflow. They are also less prone to problems caused by side drafts and engine block vacuum that you experience with pods due to the fact that they draw air from behind and aren't affected by cross winds. The downside is that in order to benefit from their design they can't have any filter over the mouth and obviously running sans filtration on the street is begging for excessive engine wear.
They wail and weep,
The march of the sheep,
As they go to that cross on the wall.

Similar problems, no filtration.

If you're running a drag racer, go with the velocity stacks.  If you're riding on the street, stick with the stock air box.  Pods are for looks.

Have you seen Tintops filtered stacks set-up yet mate? All the benefits of stacks, and all the benefits of the stock airbox, and they look good too! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

OK, we have stick with stock airbox. I don'thave one, but Iam collecting the parts for one.
Get a Tintops filtered stacks, Thanks Terry, I forgot about those  8)
Stacks are for racing. Building vintage racer from my other bike, so check.
No filtration on stacks? I'll have to ask bwaller about that. On his race bike he's running "socks" over his velocity stacks.

Now for my next question. How does velocity stack length and flare effect airflow?
I've seen some that are 1/2 an inch in lehgth and others thatare 2-4 inches. Why the difference?
