Problem: Bike only goes into neutral after stall
« on: July 29, 2010, 01:48:54 PM »
Ok, heres the problem, it goes into neutral fin when it is not running. but once I get the bike running and drop it into 1st, it won't go back into neutral and its a pain in the ass to even get it to change gears. Any suggestions? I have no clue what to do about it.. Or is this normal?
Thanks.

Clutch might be dragging.  Go through the clutch adjustment procedure and see if that fixes it.

I had to adjust the clutch so it would actually disengage and engage in to first.. Initially, when i put it into first it would instantly stall-which was a clutch issue-- now its resolved but, now it wont go back into neutral without stalling/turning off bike first..

Is it possible you didn't get the adjustment 100% correct?

What is the engine idle speed?  A high idle will make it more difficult to get into neutral.  How long since the last oil change?  My bikes are noticeably harder to get into neutral when the oil is getting old and thin.

Just changed the oil and haven't rode with the new oil. have had it running with the new oil at least an hour or more total, and clutch could be wrong, lol but not sure what else I could adjust on it to fix the problem. Oh no tach. Idle is  pretty low though. I was thinking, is there any oil that is needed to put in the transmission? could that be the problem for it being a pain to even change/go up in gear? Like I have to pull excessively hard to change it..

Engine and transmission share the same oil, so no separate oiling of the transmission is necessary.

What bike is this?  What's the history?  Did this problem just come up, or is it old, or is this bike new to you?

Take off the right side shift mechanism cover to see if anything is out of place.

Almost certainly a clutch issue; dragging.  Could be old oil or a type not suitable for wet clutches.
Could be an adjustment issue, not fully disengaging.
Could be warped clutch plates, particularly if it changes during with warm up.

Fix it soon or real transmission problems will soon occur.  Bent/ worn shifter forks, and worn shift drum components.

Change to a different oil or take the clutch apart and check the plate flatness, thickness, as well as the friction disks for the same.
