g'day
« on: July 26, 2010, 08:55:52 AM »
hi. name's glen and i'm beginning my first honda (not my first bike resto but the start with this marque) resto.

shes ratty and missing the odd bit but was a good runner when dad parked her up in the late 80's. sadly the motor is since locked up so when i can get hold of my gsx1100's toolkit (same bloody sparkies meaning same stupid non-common size socket) i'll pluck the plugs and flood the cylinders with diesel. won't be exceptionally finnicky on this bike as though i plan to use it, it's main purpose is to prep me for resurrecting dads K1 750. see how it turns out i guess.

at least though the 400 is in one piece and bar the housepaint and cockroach crap is so far coming apart ok and should be moving along steadily over the next few months as time permits. will be going back to the dark blue i found under the sidecovers and be done to a small budget doing all i can myself.

looking forward to hearing it run and sampling the handling i have heard raved about.

may have the odd question or two as i go along but am mostly self sufficient. thanks for your time, glen.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you with that wee beastie.  Best of luck, and welcome to the forums.

indeed. she's being beastly as we speak. thanks for the welcome.

things are not good:

5 of 8 compression rings are seized fast in their grooves.

plug 4's thread is half stripped. plug 2 is so bloody tight (possibly crossthreaded) that the hex and insulator sheared off leaving the thread stuck in the cylinder head.

there's an abundance of buggered phillips screw heads and locked-up bolts, and i've had to say the odd blue word in the pursuit of progress.

still, all is not lost. if it continues to throw trivialities that don't cost an arm and a leg , we shall persevere. my perturbed status must reach nigh on untenable before i abandon the project outright.

on the up side, the cam and valvegear are quite pristine and the bores will clean up ok with a little use. and we have oil pressure and a nice smooth spinning crank assembly.

and so, pending the release of the last ring sans piston damage, and the thread extraction from the head we're still on.

bar that she'll be slapped back together as is for future generations to meddle with.

fingers crossed everyone, glen.
