Does anyone know if the 750K and the 750F frame are interchangable? Has anyone ever attempted to put a 750F engine, etc on a 750 K frame? I have a 750F bike, but no title for the frame. Didnt know if that would be the easiest, to find a 750K frame/bike with a title and just change the parts over. Id hate to let my 750F go...

...yes, the K/F motors are interchangable in the frames.  Just be aware that the 77/78 motors have a slightly longer primary drive.  What year is the motor you have?

I have a '77 motor and frame... will the primary drive be a problem to work around?

Is this what most people do is to get a frame with a title and switch components? Or is there a loophole with bikes without titles?

Every state and province has different rules for vehicle titles. Call up your vehicle licensing authority and ask what's needed. I wouldn't entirely identify the vehicle or myself at first, some places will accept a bill of sale - which you could just make up showing you as the buyer and some invented person as the seller. You don't need the person you talked to about whether that would work to recognize you when you show up at the wicket.
If your area is picky and requires a title, there are services that will provide a title for a fee. I think they create a title in an easy state and send it to you so you just transfer it to your location.

...as long as u'r using the 77 rear wheel with the 77 motor you won't have a problem.

...as far as the titliing goes, buying a title frame is one was to go...alot of work though.  I've got a situation now where I'v got a bike with a title thats not in my name and no bill of sale.  I'm thinking of going thourgh Broadway or ITS for a title...its around 100-150 smacks for a new title and tags.

The only other thing i can add is that switching everything over to a K frame will cause a few headaches.

I'm drawing up my K1 and K2 projects at the moment and there's some small but significant differences between the various frames.
(I also have an F2 frame for reference)

You will need the following at least from the K model

Oil tank, Side covers, probably oil lines too (they're different on K and F and mounting points are different too)
I'm not sure but you might need the battery box etc. too - i don't have an F model battery box for reference

Other bits like the rear inner guard (plastic) will fit both models, fuel tank should swap over
The swingarms will swap over but you will have to make the disc brake rear end work -
which may mean making some brackets and doing some welding

I'm trying to build a K2 with F1 rear hub and disc brake setup,
but it's early stages and i've got a lot of planning / work to do yet

It's a big job, but it should be worth it.
CB750 K1 - undergoing restoration (on hold)
CB750 K2 - Wanted - More time to work on her
CB1300S - the most awesome bike i've owned yet
Z1000 1977 - Wanted - a head in rebuildable condition

The F models have a disk brake in the rear, the K models do not. The rear master cylinder bolts to the frame (F bikes) and there may not be a provision for this on the K frame. Also, the left side cover is different mounting(77-78 F), can't remember if the mounts are in the frame but if they are then you will have to use K side covers. Rear fender is different on F models and not sure if you'll run into trouble in mounting it to K frame.Does anyone know if the seat latch changes sides? I don't know, all I have are '78 750F's :)

The short answer is you can swap some of your F bike but not all. The only frame that you can do a complete parts swap is 77-78 750F. I was looking into getting a titled frame for one of my parts bikes and decided it would be easiest to either get a new title through one of the services or wait for a titled 77-78 F kunker to show up on Craigslist.

brookesy hit most of this while I was typing, but I'm too lazy to edit :)
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Sounds fun!! You'll have to let me know how your project goes...

What would be ideal is to find a 77 750F frame with a title that I could just swap parts and wha-la!, be done with it.... but those are probably few and far between.

My '77 750F is mostly complete, but the last owner let it sit outsied for about 5 years and the motor is stuck. The rear axle is missing and the side covers are gone. Ive got a big project ahead of me, but I think i'll wait for my kid to grow up and help me with it (another enthusiast:)

My frame problem is pretty much a gimme because I have no bill of sale, no title, no nothing... unless someone has an easy answer!

Bodi/scrondon, let me know about this place that creates titles and transfers them. Sounds like an easy fix (if its legal:)

Thanks for the info!

You reminded me, Scondon...

Yes ... F series have a single seat hinge - on the other side to the K - seat pan is completely different

The frame extensions holding the rear guard are longer - so the guard must be different

Left sidecover mounts are part of the frame - right sidecover mounts are on the oil tank
CB750 K1 - undergoing restoration (on hold)
CB750 K2 - Wanted - More time to work on her
CB1300S - the most awesome bike i've owned yet

An F1 swingarm will fit straight into a K2 frame (I am not sure about an F2). I built up a K2 special with an F1 swing arm and rear disc, alloy rims, 836 kit, F1 triple tree etc.
The main problem was to mount and connect up the master cylinder. I used a VF750 MC
The seats are quite different as are the rear guards, Side covers etc..
Also I have owned a K6 with an F1 engine- no problem.
Not sure about F2 gear as I have only owned and restored an F2 motor. No experience either with K7-8, except the K7-8 engine is identical (cam, pistons, valves etc) to the F/F1 except for the output shaft/bearing and the carbs. I have used parts from an K7 to complete an F1 engine.

the two title services I know of are http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ and http://www.its-titles.com/ .  I know of at least one person who has used ITS with resonable results.  Basically he got a license plate and registration (no title) from the state of Maine.  Maine does not require titles for vehicles under a certain year.  The plate is good for a year. At that point, he transferred the bike to his home state (Arkansas).  This is not a fool proof plan, as some DMV's may still requrie a title.

Anyone have any experience with either of these places???

While we're on the subject of F1 rear ends... (or not)

Does anyone know of modern discs which will fit the F1 rear hub?

Also, what discs will fit the front hub?

ughhh! its too bad that "F" frames with titles are easier to come by...

Thanks all for the replies... If anyone knows it a K7/8 frame(or another year frame) will work best with the F2, let me know. I think it should work out with only a bit of cosmetic changing.

Dusterdude/Lumbee, what service is out of Alabama? Is the service out of Maine one where they issue a regisration and you can transfer it then and there, or will the bike need to be under Maine plates for a year to transfer out?

Dusterdude, I live in Iowa (no potatoes here, like they have in Idaho:)

...hey nun...Broadway is out of Alabama, I'm not exactly sure how they do business, Duster may be able to answer that.  ITS is actually out of Las Vegas, NV.  I called and talked with them, and the guy said they have a few states they do business with.  I think it depends on the year and type of vehicle.  He said specifically for a 77 750 that the registration would come out of the state of Maine.  He said that after a year [with the Maine tags] I could then transfer it to my home state.  Not sure why u'd need to keep the plates a year, but thats what he said.

when i did my title, broadway sent me a form,i then "sold" the bike to them,at that time alabama didnt need a title for an old vehicle just a bill of sale, then they title the bike in alabama and then "sell"the bike to you with a good alabama title.then all you do is transfer the title at your dmv.

You mentioned a longer drive shaft on the 77/78.. i have a 71 with a molested frame (seat mounts chopped, new ones thrown on the back) but I just talked to a guy who has a 78 frame (no chops) with the wheels, swingarm, forks, seat, and headlight bucket that he is willing to give me for free. My question is; how big of a pain would it be to place the 71 motor in there? were'nt the 78s all dohc? Also, you know those shocks we ALL bought from that guy on ebay?? I bought a pair for my 71. Will they fit on the 78 frame??

Cheers

Re: frames

...this would be doable, but not without mods.  1st off, the DOHC models started in 79, so 78's are SOHC's.  The 71 motor would fit in the 71 frame OK, but if you use the 78 wheel, it is off set to match the 78 motor which is farther out than the 69-76 years.  You have two options:

1-Use the 78 wheel, and recut spacers so the rear sproket is brough in (that is closer to the center) to match the front sproket from the 71.  You also may be able to use the hub/cush drive from a 69-76 and marry it to the 78 wheel.

2-Mount an earlier wheel (69-76) on the 78 swingarm.  If you go this route u'll still have to cut some new spacers to make the wheel fit as I'm almost positive the 78 swingarm is wider than earlier years.

If Broadway only does bikes up to 74, then they've changed. I used them back in 2001 for my '76 CB550. Same as Dusterdude- sent away for their packet, filled out the right forms, sent them the fee, power of attorney form, bill of sale, etc. and got back a bill of sale from the 'seller' and legal Alabama registration. They also included a letter from the 'governor' stating that, in Alabama, the title was not required for proof of ownership, but their registration should satisfy the legal requirements of those states that require one to verify title creation or some such. The gal at the DMV raised an eyebrow, but it went thru anyway. ;)
Tried ITS a few months ago, and sent off my packet. It got sent back in its entirety, along with a 'new' Power of Attorney form, and a requirement for extra moneys! I said screw it, and haven't tried it again- I'm not that desperate yet.
Personally, I think the whole title/registration/plating business is a big racket to garner taxes, and I hate it.  :-\

If you're going to put the K1 (71) engine in an F2 (78) frame -
the easiest way will be to transplant the whole rear end.
Swingarm, wheel, spacers - everything.

The swingarm will fit so it shouldn't be a problem

If you want to use the F2 rear wheel you will have to pack the drive spocket out to suit the rear sprocket alignment

The shock mount locations are different for all the different swingarm types - so i assume the shocks would be different lengths too - not sure

hope this helps

Well, according to the guy that has the frame, it's a SOHC. It's date of mfg. is '77. The VIN indicates a K model. So, I am guessing this will make a difference. The VIN is 1978 CB 750K #2828237

See, here's my problem... I dont have a bill of sale for my 750F. I bought my 750K with a title and the 750F without one. The guy said that he lost the title. Will Broadway still work without a bill of sale saying I bought the bike, or am I reading wrong? IS there an easier way, or am I destined to have to find a frame with a title? Thanks!
