bike stolen last night!
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:53:28 PM »
Hi guys,
Hell of a day today!

Woke up to find someone broke into my shed where my Honda was and it's gone!

I had my sportster at the Midwest motorcycle fest last night, came home around 4am. I found my gate open to the backyard but didn't think anything of it. When I let the dogs out this morning I saw the lock was broken off the shed and ran back there to find one less bike! It happened sometime between 10pm when i left and 4am when i got home.

I think they might have been after the Harley. I have been driving it a lot lately and I leave it out under a cover quite a bit. That's over with!

I went to the police station, but they said there is nothing for them to fingerprint. Nothing smooth enough to get a clean print. Along with the bike, they took one of my full face helmets and a bunch of tools. Asked the neighbors if they saw anything but one was not home and the other said her dog was going ballistic at 2 in the morning. Didn't look out front though.

Keep an eye out for 550 parts on craigslist for me. I'm sure no one is going to try to sell the bike, but they probably will sell the parts, right? What are my chances of getting the bike back?

Oh man bro, I feel for you.  I'm guessing the HD has a little more value, so at least there is that  :-\
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Yeah the HD is a bit more valuable, but it has better insurance too. I probably won't get much for the Honda. I have a stated value policy, but after my deductible I will still be out a good chunk of money!

Not to mention all your efforts... thats a good looking bike bud. Sorry someone decided to take yours rather than build their own.  :-\

Sorry to here about your Honda shizz. It's terrible that there are a few low life SOB'S in this world that are so sorry that have to steal from hard working good people. I hope they are caught and thrown under the jail.

Well, since i live only 20 miles west of detroit, I really don't think I am going to get the bike back. It's probably in 100 pieces right now.  :'( I posted a wanted add for 74/75 cb550 parts. I'll see if someone is stupid enough to sell me my own parts!

Already trolling the craigslist for another bike....maybe a 750? I don't know. Never filed a claim before, so I get to have the joy of dealing with insurance adjusters for the first time

Yeah, a lot of people knew where to look. I had my kz550 for sale for about a month. I had at least 10-15 people over looking at it before someone bought it.

Yeah, the parts are worth less than a grand.

I'm going to get a motion sensor for the backyard. Too bad my dogs weren't out. I have a 100 pound doberman and a 80 pound american bulldog. I'm sure these guys would have never made it out of the yard!

Damn, I hate hearing stories like this.  Sounds like someone knew where to look ahead of time.  Someone in the neighborhood or a friend of a friend maybe?
Sorry about your bike and i hope you get it back AND I hope the MFer who did it get's hit by truck.  I hate thieves more than most other criminals.  There are fewer things more pathetic than taking something rather than working for it.

Personally, I've been trying to buy a disc lock but I can't find one that will fit!  I'm about to try the ABUS Quick 37.  I'll report my findings.  I think I'm going to get a portable cover and a big ass Kryptonite New York chain to keep it chained in my garage.  God, I hate thieves.

I'm sorry to hear about this too, best of luck finding it in one piece somewhere. Maybe even check out your local track day organizations or vintage racing organizations?   Maybe someone will keep it the way you built it.

On a side note, a friend recently told me that if I ever sell a bike that I should ride it to a neutral parking lot somewhere, and not show it at my house (And never give out your full name or address unless you have the cash in hand).  Just for added security, one never knows.

WTF!!! All that work and time and nothing. Some good tips in here though. get lojack for your HD if it's worth it...

Sorry man that sucks. If it helps I have a story.

I had my snowboard stolen from my apartment once... I came to find out later that it was my roommate that stole it along with a few other things. I moved but stayed in touch with some other people that told me two years later my ex-roommate crashed in the trees and broke his collar bone arm and a few ribs...I don't know if he was on my board but I hope your thief parks it first then gets hit by a bus while crossing the street!!!

Sometimes thieves are stupid enough to give it a different crude paint job and ride it. Saw another SOHC4 member who had his ride stolen, perfect stock condition original, and recovered a few months later. Thieves had rattlecan crude red paint over the original an painted over and lots of overspray. Ended up dropping it once or twice apparently.
Hope it is recovered

Well as much time and money as I have into it, makes me really want it back. But if it has been rattlecanned and dropped a few times, I would much rather have a whole new bike to be honest.

With the knowledge I have now and the people I met locally building the bike, I'm sure I can build a better bike the second time around.

Well, I will keep you all informed with the situation.

Does anyone have a line on a project bike? Or just a frame for a 550?

I think I will start another build in the coming weeks

That quote reminds me of someone who isn't a thief who was hit by a bus while crossing the street on the way back to his own bike.   I honestly don't think I'd wish that on anyone.
