Where can i get a brass plug for a Mikuni carb?
« on: July 31, 2010, 03:17:46 PM »
I'm working on a Suzuki Bandit today, doing a carb rebuild. One of the brass plugs is missing from one of the carb bodies. PO had jammed a rubber plug in there holding it in with gasket sealer, which blocked flow through one of the passages through the carb. Where could i get one of these? Should i just take it to a machine shop and have them make a plug?

I don't even see how to remove that plug in the first place. It's just a press fit, and its a blind hole so you cant really press it out. I played around with another carb trying to blow it out with compressed air and it wasn't happening.

Maybe the PO drilled it out, thinking he was drilling out the cap that the manufacturer fits over the idle-air screw?

How 'bout making a little tin cover that's just slightly larger than the OEM brass plug and super-gluing or even JBWelding the cover onto that little 'shelf' that you can see in the first picture.  Something to cover the opening where the brass plug used to fit, but not plug up the internal passages?

I was actually thinking about using a shell casing for this exact purpose. I would think that would work pretty well.

The PO made his own caps out of caulking for the air screw. I don't mind Jerry-rigging things on my own bikes, but working on friends bikes i always want to do it right, or at least so it looks right  ;)
