Knights & Steeds to Slay the Dragon
« on: July 31, 2010, 07:43:43 PM »
Calling all Merry Men & Knights of the SOHC4 Roundtable to join in on a sacred quest to "Slay the Dragon". I have heard the call and have started to gather enough road warriors to start the crusade. Our plans are to leave Cleveland, Ohio at 7:30 am on Friday August 20th and arrive at Deals Gap Resort by 6:00 pm that day. Spend all day Saturday, the 21st riding all the spectacular roads in the area. Ride the Dragons Tail a last time as we head back home on the 22nd. Full trip will be in excess of 1500 miles.

Planned route will be I-71 to I-75 to I-275 to US129/Tn115 to Deals Gap. 560 miles and 9.75 hours on the road.  Figure to be through Columbus about 9am, to be through Cincinnati about noon, Knoxville about 4pm and the Gap by 6 pm.

You may join in on our path at any point along the way and leave the journey at your own discretion. If you are interested, let me know. I made a reservation for a room in Robbinsville (Two Wheel Inn. You may camp or cabin or motel at your own making. If you ride....and live east of the Mississippi....once in your life.....you should ride the Dragon......once done....yee shall forever be known as a "Dragon Slayer". Those that have ridden and conquered it will testify. 11 miles of 318 turns with breath taking scenery to behold. Twisty Heaven.

Just got back July 20th, it was my 4th pilgrimage to the Dragon.  Yes it is a spectacular road, a real must for all motorcyclists.  But there are many other roads, somewhat less technical and more enjoyable in the area.  Would have loved to join in but the wife would kill me if I headed back so soon!

Wow man, that title just took me back to the 80's with a few other future felon friends huddled over a billiard table covered in Dungeons and Dragons books and a pile of dice. Good times. . I wont be ridin with you all, but best of luck and have a safe trip.  8)

send me a PM and we can swap cell #'s   Our plans have morphed some as we decided that we will spend friday night in Maryville, tn. figured that running the dragon late in the day after a 9+hr day on a road was not the smartest thing to do.

I would love to go! I'm doing a 2500 mile trip next week around the great lakes. I'll have a week to recover and then as long as the 350 is still in one piece i'll head down there.

Pray tell me, Sir Raymond, who of the Cleveland Knights shall be partaking in the crusade apon Maryville and persuit of the Dragon.
Here in Gnashville, 1 or 2 Knights may be preparing their steeds and polishing their armour for the big day, what say you, Sire? Any wenches allowed in camp,?

Ah Sire Spanner, There are many that speak up but not sure how many will follow thru. I ride my Magna Steed and my fellow knight is on his white winged stallion. There have been knights of the sohc4 and the V4 castles that have raised their swords and said their vows. But until the day, one can only guess if their hearts are true. Would Count FBomb be thy brother in arms? We camp in Alcoa on the night of Friday. The first attack on the dragon shall be on the morn of saturday. Then we shall ride the hills and dales of the surrounding forests and trails. We camp at the inn of the two wheel of Robbinsville on the evening of Sat. On the next morn, we shall slay it one more time on our way back to our home land of lake of erie. Wenches are welcome in camp and on the back of steeds unless they have proven themselves worthy of knighthood.

Your humble knight,

Oh I think my wench is worthy of Knighthood ;D... I've annoyed her with my knighthood lots of.... Oh wait, that's a different forum!!
All 'bravado' aside MH, I'would consider trailering the bikes down to TN.... it's really not so much fun on the Interstate for such a distance ( as you know!).. but still a great ride to Maryville in a day... go for it.... you'll have to drink beer horizontally at the bar tho', 'cos your asses will have severe 'monkey butt' on FRiday night  ;D ;D

Stop in at the Jameson Inn in Alcoa, you're 15 min from the 441 and 129 junction.  They love bike groups there and it's a good clean hotel, with a pool.  The Honda Spirit group stays there every year.

Well, I did a ride of 520 mi. the middle of last month. wasn't until the last 50-75 mi. that the butt started to get sore. From my house to Alcoa is 517 mi. and then the next day, another 43 mi to the Deals Gap. Then about 200 around the various roads and some sightseeing. The Sunday ride will be the butt cruncher. Somewhere around 580 and mostly uphill. That will be a long day.

Wow, not really sure how I missed this thread.  Sounds like a good time is going to be had by all, I think I must be there.  I'm off that weekend so if all goes to plan I should be able to make it.  I'm not sure what machine I'll be on but either way I will be a SOHC, just might be only 2 cylinder instead of 4.  If you would like I could see if I can rally so of the GA troops too to make the ride even more fun.

Keep the updates coming.

Sounds like a winner to me.....Like I mentioned, we will probably be passing thru Cincinnati around noon. Only change of plans so far is not trying to run the dragon friday night. Will stop in Alcoa, TN and then head down in the morning. PM me for my cell # and we can iron out any details.

Sound good to me. Besides the dragon, we are planning to make a big circle around the area...Routes...28,74,143,360, and if everyone is up to it...might run over to the BRP and do some miles on that.

Derek,
You've got your own dragon on the west coast. Called Mulholland Drive. Runs along the hills above HollyWood, La, and Beverly Hills. Spectacular ride. Worth the ride down I can assure you. Never did it on a bike, but in a sports car and it was wild.

Blue Ridge Parkway is great.

If you're going to the dragon, hit it first thing in the morning. The Harley pirates and sport bike riders aren't out yet, and you can enjoy it at your own pace without being held up or blown by.

I did it in a rental POS chevy minivan and it was a blast.. I can't imagine how fun it would be on a bike.

Sir Spanner of gnashville. Doust thow think cb750bomb might come with his steed? If you have a FRS radio, we plan to use them to keep in touch. There may be some that plan to come up from GA. We expect to hit as many of the great roads that surround the dragon's tail on sat. I figure that we will probably put on about 300 miles on sat.
