I can get it on there, but the angle is off so I think my adjustor might have stripped a bit. So what happens if I install like this? It's up a thread I think. This was literally the last bolt I tightened.

OK-Confusing post. No year,bike size,carb type and are we talking a sync job  ???  GOTTA give the guys a little more--------------------

My apologies. 1975 CB550f. The cap nut is not threading evenly. I believe this is the cap used to sync the carbs. It has the spring in it. Anyway it's an uneven thread, and I'm pretty sure I'm screwed (pardon the pun). I think I need to get a new adjust holder -- one that has even threading or my carbs won't sync.

Are you talking about the brass "cap nut" as indicated by the white arrow in the pic below?  If so, it just holds the linkage together (under spring pressure), so once installed it has nothing more to do with the carb sync procedure.

Take it off, clear all the debris out of the threads and try to reinstall it as squarely as possible.  As long as it tightens up adequately against the spring, it'll be fine.   The sync is done with the screws indentfied by the green arrows.
