Front brake dragging still...what next?
« on: August 01, 2010, 11:00:35 AM »
Ive had my brake caliper apart and cleaned twice in the past 2 months with little relief. It still drags against the front rotor as if it wont retract enough when I release the brake lever. Last time I had it apart I didnt put any grease on the caliper piston at all. What should I try next to resolve this issue?

Rebuild the master cylinder. There is a tiny hole in there that plugs very easily. If it plugs it wont allow the piston to retract.

The reason these stick is corrosion BEHIND the seal, not a gummed up piston or rusty bore.  Remove the seal and carefully scrape behind it in the groove with a punch or small screwdriver.  It is important to get all the white/gray powder from the corners of the groove.  This has done it for me about 17 times.  I seldom even replace the seal.  Reassemble with brake fluid lightly applied and ride.

It's the brake piston seal. If it is old and stiff it will not pull the piston back into the cylinder after squeezing the breke lever. The seal "distorts" whe then the lever is pulled and returns to normal shape when the lever is released, pulling te piston/pad away from the disk.

You also may have to do this a few times... last time I cleaned a set of frozen brakes up it took 6 times to get it to retract.

It's hard to get all that gunk in there and until you do, it will stick.

Cheers
