A local forum member passed away last night.
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:13:20 AM »
I just logged in to a local automotive forum today, and found out a member was killed in an accident while installing a clutch in his car.

I met the guy a few times, really a great guy and will be missed by the Indianapolis automotive community.

He had the car on jackstands, and it shifted and fell on him. Be careful under your cars guys, anything can happen.

RIP Ben Towle.

Unless it's on an actual hydraulic lift in my BIL's professional garage, I don't go under.  Scares the hell out of me.

Sorry for your loss, buddy.

I usually put a couple of pumped up car wheels under the car while on stands so if it moves it can only drop a couple of inches.....Condolences...

damn sorry to hear it!!! I have been under mine huindreds of time and even dozens without the stands! I have learned to be a little more careful but anything can happen!! Even the other day I was trying to get the O2 sensor off of my Cavalier and was reefing so hard I could feel the car moving. I felt it best to wait and cool off a bit. Hopefully this Sunday I have more luck with mucho penetrating oil.

It can all happen so quick....  :'(

I drove past a guy who was under a car in his driveway on a bumper jack, I wanted to stop and say something but you know, not my business. The next day it was in the paper, it fell on him.

I'm so anal about a car falling on me that even with a trolly jack and jack stands I always put the spare wheel under as well, if it falls I wanna be as thin as my spare wheel.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

That's terrible mate, my condolences. I've been thinking about buying a 2 post hoist for working under cars in my garage, you can buy one now for under 3 thousand bucks, it might seem like a lot of cash, but apart from the beauty of being able to work under your car at a comfortable working height, it's a hell of a lot safer than jacks, jack stands, spare tires, milk crates, etc. Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Awful news - deepest sympathy goes out to you and his family. I am so nervous about working on a car that I never bother, stick to two wheels and let a pro do the car work...scares the pants off me!

Well the good in this (if there can be any) is it reminds others to work more carefully. I was doing some work in the garage changing my wheel bearing on the cavalier this aft and his story struck me in the back of my mind and I made sue to use the jackstands and actually slide the tire under the frame so if it dropped at least it wouldn't be all the way....

dang!  i spent 3.5 hours under my old mustang on 4 jack stands last night...  i'm always skeptical about going under any vehicle on stands, guess i need to come up with a better way to make sure shes secure on the stands!  that's horrible about him though...
