New bike '73 CB 350F starting rebuild
« on: February 02, 2006, 10:07:45 AM »
Hello all,
I bought this back back in may for $80 at a garage sale in boxes.
was going to build a cafe/bober style bike, but the wife had other ideas for the money.
now that the weather in geting nice and tax time is coming im going to get the old girl legal and need some advice on a few issues...

The font master CYL. is lock with the brake on need help geting pisten unstuck and where to find a rebuild kit.

Mufflers are rotted out and dont think thay would pass inspection altho thay arnt that laud.
is there any way to repack the old mufflers, is not i say a bike some where on the page with glass packs on the stock head pipe i like the look but how would you seal the joint?

Those of you that have reapolsterd you own seats, how does the cover attach to the pan?
all i can see is the little claws that attach the chrome strip.

i have managed to start the bike and ride around the block a few times with the choke all the way on so first off is a carb rebuild (in the mail now) so i know for the most part the bike runs and shifts 'ok'.
im a pretty good mechanic i've been helping dad with his race cars and our habit of collecting 'junk' cars so im not scared to tear into this thing but this is my first motorcycle.

Thanks for any advice!
~Derek~

I'd get the factory manual (www.motorcycling.net) rather than the clymer's. I've used Clymer's and am not impressed with them, though they are better than nothing.

its got a 13mm piston...whats size is the stocker?
not 'real' worried about the brake being sharp im used to riding BMX with "V" brakes mine will lock solid with just my little finger pulling.

If you can get the circlip out of the master cylinder, you should be able to press the guts out from the banjo bolt end. Using a hardwood or brass rod, I think pushing on whatever is closest to the hole (check valve?) would push the whole stack of parts out.
I would check the bore condition, if the piston has somehow stuck to it there may be corrosion.

I used a FZR-600 master cylinder on a CB-400N and it works just fine.
I don't see how those old brakes could get too sharp  ;D

Ok, got the brakes sorted out for now.
next question about the mufflers, i want to stick with the 4-2  pipes but the mufflers are rotted out and dont have the cash for new pipes till the devorce is settled.
is there any one that makes a slip on 4-2 muffler or a collecter that i can use glass packs on the 'stock' head pipes (no rust nice chrome no blueing)?
or how can i repack/quite the pipes for inspection?

Dang, is this the "other ideas" your wife had for the money? Not the best 'investment', IMO, but best of luck to you.
You can get a FSM from here: http://www.honda4fun.com/man_officina/man_officina.html - it lists two that cover the 350, but I think the first one will suit you better.
You can get slip-in baffles and fiber packing material for your mufflers at good old http://www.jcwhitney.com :
Baffles: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Browse/tf-Browse/s-10101/showCustom-0/refId-600001975/N-111+10211+600001975/c-10111

Packing material: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2006469/showCustom-0/p-2006469/N-111+10211+600012701/c-10111
I found a 4-1 exhaust for the 350-4 at Dennis Kirk, but it's $300! Not my idea of a budget bike item. I also found a pair of 4-2 slip-ons (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=403&productId=p25567&leafCatId=40301&mmyId=#altImages) but it's going to be a custom fit, may require a bit of 'tweaking' to get them to fit right.
If there's anything left of the muffler body after the collector, you might look into cutting the muffler body and clamping on a glasspack muffler with the same inlet diameter. It'll be quite 'hoopty', and you'll have to fab your own muffler hangers, but if you save a couple bucks and get away with it, what the heck.

To remove the old seat cover, just bend those hooks back and peel the cover off. When you recover it, cover the foam with plastic rap to keep the water off the pan. There is a great site that gives you a step by step to recover you seat. I'll see if I can dig up the link.
