First good ride on ressurected 350f
« on: February 24, 2006, 02:30:29 PM »
I'm about finished with this winter's phase of my 350f project. Finally had the weather and time for a 30 mile ride this afternoon. Overall, I was really pleased. The motor ran great. Never missed a beat. It's very windy here, so it pulled the heck out of it against the wind, but it would still pull 60+ in high. With the wind I ran it to 80 breifly just to check it out. When I got back there was a little smoke from the exhaust, but with a new ring job I'm sure it needs to be broke in. Riding position is great, with drag bars, 400f peg mounts and seat cut down to about 1-1/2" of padding. One of the best things I did was a set of Tim the Shock Guy's Boge shocks. They are pretty stiff on a light 350f even with softest springs, but the difference in handling is incredible over the 32 year old spring hangers (can't really call them shocks) that were on there. There's a couple things I have to work on, I didn't get the front wheel balanced good enough. Also the clutch cable needs to be lubed and/or rerouted, it bound a couple times and the clutch slipped a bit. Also I need to work out a shorter rear brake pedal to go with the 400f peg brackets. That's far from a direct swap. Overall though, I was really happy with the progress I've made. This thing is a gas to ride!  ;DI still want to build a fiberglass hump cover for the back of the seat, then I'll post some pics.

Well, yeah, I mostly did. but I didn't figure it would hurt to run it up a time or two. I guess everyone has their own opinion on this, but I've had motors that were broken in too easily and never did seal the rings. I'm somewhere in the middle of the debate, take it mostly easy but run it a little hard once in a while to break things in.

350f's were few and far between here also. The more my mind keeps wandering, I think this is going to be an ongoing project, a winter at a time!

re the breaking in process, I once asked a seasoned campaigner at the races how he broke in his new bikes since I was about to get a new one myself and he said 20 laps.
