Building custom bars for 1982 cb650sc
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:06:30 PM »
Hey gang got yet another strange project I'm working on that I thought I would throw out there for opinions.

The 1982 cb650sc has the clip on style handlebars where they are seperate pipes.

I bought a spare set and plan on cutting them down and welding some sort of clamp system to the tops so I can mount regular single bar styled bars on it.  The idea is kind of similar to handlebar risers you can buy for other bikes and such.

I'm thinking of getting a low cost pair of risers and welding those to the end to get the job done.  Any ideas or advice on things that might work for a clamp system? I want to make sure its secure and not gonna kill me.

Also I had seen a post about a little filter that can attach to the drain hose fitting.(that big black one on top of the engine).  Anyone know which thread that was or what I'm talking about? I can't seem to locate it:)

anyways any advice on the handlebar project is greatly appreciated

You could put on a 81 custon upper triple clamp but then unless you made a adaptor bracket youd need the 81 gauges too.

I built a set of ape hanger clip ons for a cb750. I used a set of uesd older vortec style clip ons with removable bars that take a straight press fit bar (some clipons use a taipered press fit bar). I then cut a pair of 7/8" ape hangers in half, tripped them to the proper length so they weren't too wide and pressed fit them in. Ever the stickler for safety I ended up drilling and tapping a locating bolt so they couldn't wiggle loose over time (i even tac welded a nut inside the handlebar but you could probably get away with a sunken allen head putting pressure on the bar). I built them for a cb750 project I ended up going a different direction on and they are buried in my garage somewhere. They look so cool I just may use them for something eventually, I built them like that to be adjustable, so you could slide them up and down the forks or drop the forks down without bar clearance issues.
