Hmm, don't know if it would work, but would be interested to find out. We have several left-turn lanes/lights in Ann Arbor that don't respond to MC mass at all. You could sit there all day until a car comes up behind you.

Same here. I'd try one if we had a traffic light in the county. But right now, if you have to wait for three or more cars at a stop sign it's considered a traffic jam.

I think you are buying a magnet or worse, just a piece of Iron.  An electromagnet would be better, but that needs a power source and this thing says no installation necessary. I see what you mean about some make sense and some don't. I really like the suggestion to proceed with caution after waiting 15 minutes.. like I would ever be that patient.  In town here, I have corresponded with the city about it and they indicated they are actually wire loops here so I should try sitting in the lane slightly right or left of center to see if that helps. They offered to adjust the sensitivity of one in particular if I were willing to assist. I said I would... still waiting for the call, ha, ha.

I've seen these on Ebay for years, did you check his feedback? Anyone rip on him for selling "snake oil"? Sorry, I don't have access to Ebay on my army compuker? (lucky for me they don't mind me looking at this site, ha ha!)

I have a magnet from a fanuc ac motor.  About the size of a domino, but about a 10# pull.  I can stick it under the bike and go down the street and see if it works for me.

Terry, there was nothing in his feedback that seemed suspicious, but then again, there wasn't a feedback that said, "wow, this magnet makes the light turn green!"  I've been guilty of leaving a positive feedback (for a sprocket) that later turned out to be junk.

Yeah, we've all done that mate, we tend to leave feedback based more on delivery time before we get a chance to actually test the part.

Be careful with that magnet though, if it's that strong it might stop your crank from turning, or worse still, pull the rings right off your pistons! Tell you what though, send me 10 bucks and I'll send you my patented "Anti-Magnetic Drive-Train Isolator"!

Some states have passed legislation that allows motorcyclists to "run" red lights if they do not change within a reasonable amount of time.  Reads something like "using due caution".  Tennessee, for instance, is one of these states (if I remember correctly).

The motorcycle saftey course I took discussed these things.

Some are low powered magnets and/or a big hunk of metal.  Its based off that most turn signal tiggers use a magnetic type field to sense the large hunk of metal sitting above it to see the car.  Most bikes are too small to affect it enough to get a good signal.  It also depends on where the actual things are under the ground you might get a better response if your right above it.


I noticed the ones where I live can be triggered if I move the bike around (rocking it back and forth etc)

I've thought of buying one of these things as the motorcycle shops near me sell a few different kinds.

Left hand turn arrows are sometimes called protected left hand turns.  If you can see that there's no one coming, you can treat it as a stop sign. (Check with local law, and no, Terry doesn't count- wrong uniform!)

There are some secondary streets that crosses main streets. There is no need to stop traffic on the main street if there is nobody waiting in the secondary one. With an angle grinder the cut a rectangular groove on the road and lay two or three turns of wire, to make an inductor. A special board will be connected to the inductor to detect wether there is a vehicle over it. In Spain they use it also on highways to count the number of vehicles per time unit.

It's perfectly possible that a bike doesn't trigger the stoplight, because the ferrous material is almost only the frame -and not even that on modern bikes. I would say a big magnet would work better than a tiny  piece of metal.

I dunno................if you just stick it on, that will use up some of the magnetisim.  I'd JB Weld it on with a magnetic shield inbetween.

IMO: If you have access to an old compter hard drive, bust it open and rip out the magnet.  It should work just as well.

Stripping out a bunch of old computer hard drives, they have a strong magnet in them, I just lay em on the frame and see what happens.  If it works - $1 plus postage

But don't send any money yet, I'm listening to all the suggestions my family pets have been throwing at me about some kinda "Cow Catcher" device I can build that slips over the front wheel and makes all the traffic lights go green immediately? A magnet the size of brick may not help.  The wires in the ground are called ground loop detectors.  I sell them with automated gates to activate opening and closing functions  etc.  The thing is that the wire in the ground is suppose to be about an inch below the paved surface.  When roads are resurfaced, which is quite a few times here where I live, the loop wires start to get deeper in the road.  This plus wires breaking down from age in time will emit a weaker signal, thus the green light takes forever to trip.  Metal trips the sensor not a magnet.  And yes the bigger the mass of metal the faster the trip.  Motorcycles do have trouble being recognized.
If you can see the original cut for the loop (which is now covered with black top) put your ride in the center of the retangler to be better recognized.

Ahhh, technology, doubt. A lot of these are on pedestrian crossings, just get you pillion to to jump off and press the crossing button, better still shout at passer by.
