550K with MAC4-1, no baffle....too loud?
« on: June 15, 2010, 07:16:29 AM »
Quick question, please.

Anyone on here ever heard or rode a 550 with a MAC 4-1 without a baffle?

I want a Yosh pipe, but since they are unobtainable, I'm toying with the idea of using a MAC 4-1 with the canister chopped off....in effect making a Yoshi style exhaust.  Just need to know if the noise is prohibitive.

As far as back pressure, that can be handled easy enough, by drilling a hole in the bottom of the pipe and inserting a washer with some threads welded on the end.  Once in the pipe...the threads stick through the hole, and you can turn/adjust the washer to add backpressure as needed......an old Harley drag pipe trick that really works! ;)

Anyhow, just want to know about the volume of the exhaust.

This setup, especially if it is ceramic coated could really be the "cats pajamas". ;D

Thanks in advance.

Yes. It is too loud.  Unless, you are actually AT the race track.

When a friend of mine at work was looking to buy his CB500, it had an older 4-1 exhaust much like the MAC on it with no baffle.  Since he did not yet have his license at the time, I test rode it for him.  It sounded cool at idle....but was deafening at highway speed.  Unless you are going to use the bike for the track, I'd use the baffle...unless you want to lose your hearing....or your neighbors to hate your guts.  :)

no baffle is just utterly ridiculous.  Yes, I've tried it.  It rattles windows, sets off car alarms, and attracts lots of unwanted police attention.

MAC 4->1 sounds good enough with the baffle.

Loads of fun for a bit, but is rediculous.
If you've never tried it, give it a go, it's a hoot.
I repacked mine with about a quarter of the glass and struck a nice balance of ridability and
racetrack rip when you tach it over 7k

Interesting, but my MAC 4->1 came with no glass at all.  Admittedly, I think the package arrived in fairly bad shape when I bought it, so it may have been opened and the glass removed.  Perhaps my jetting advice is not 100% applicable for MAC 4->1s, after all.

I occasionally run my cb650 mac with no baffle. It's fun for a day or so, then it gets really old. It sounds awesome, so boomy down low, and above 7K it is an absolutely deafening scream. I was told you could hear me coming almost 2 miles away. I would like to modify my baffle to kinda strike a balance between the two.

Did your MAC come with glass, or just a steel baffling mechanism?

I know this post has kinda run its course but I too tried chopping a custom 4 into 1 with no baffle and my 750 was SO LOUD! It was insanely loud, I have a neighbor with a Harley and he poked his head out to see what all the ruckus was about. I'm going to make a steel baffle similar to what I have on my EG6 to shut it up. I just didn't know the old girl could sound like that.  :)

Joe,
I have not personally heard it, however Spikey has, I believe he has done it before and told me it was way too loud. That said, why not try it.. Your baffle should come out by unscrewing the bolt in the back, I know mine works that way and I believe we have the same exhaust. I can not get mine all the way out with out a puller tho, yours however is new and should come out easy enough, and go back in easy as well.

My MAC  (CB 750 bike)came with the mechanical baffle and sounded really bad. Bought the MAC "glass packed" baffle and it really improved the tone.
You can also pack in some fiber glass around the mechanical baffle and it should help.
