rear brake rod inter-changability???
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:05:39 AM »
will a rear brake rod of a 74 cb750 fit/work on a 78 cb750? are the brake rods different at all between the years?

I'm pretty sure they're all the same length.

The mounting bracket on my 71 was all the way up against the pivot point, and the one on a 77/78 is an inch or so away from it.
I have an 80 swing arm and its about 2.5 inches away from the pivot and uses the same arm.

Wait a minute!!!  ...are you talking about the actuator rod that moves the shoes? cause they're different lengths by about 2-3 inches.

Compare the part numbers.

Industrial,
I mean the skinny rod from the brake pedal to the actuator lever - with the spring and adjuster nut.

Compare the part numbers.

Yea, I did this once I found a sight that listed the numbers of unavailable parts. They are the same part niumber.

the 77-78 are longer than the 76 on back. because of the longer swing arm.

the early 80's model CB750s with the drum brake had an even longer one (in case you're doing rear sets with a drum)

At the risk of resurecting a somewhat old thread ... what is the measurement from the front on the brake rod to the front of the spring stop on a pre- 1977 cb750?

I have a 77 rod that I am modifing to fit on my 72.

Thanks for the help

Gary

I am going to grind off the foreword spring stop and run some new threads up the rod until I have the same length of rod as a 73.

If someone knows the distance of the rod from the foreword spring stop to the front end of the rod that would help

nobody knows?   apparently it's a mystery.
make a thread with "how long is a 77-78 drum brake rod?" as the subject, you'll get an answer 'right quick'.

Sorry I forgot about this yesterday. My 77 CB750K rear brake rod measures  23.5 inches in length and the threaded portion is 4 inches.

The other thing I've noticed is the brake arm on the drum is shorter on the 77 compared to an earlier one (4 inches compared to 5 inches)

just in case anyone else is in the same boat. Stuck with a 77 rod and trying to make it work on an early CB750

I took a 6mm die and after removing the raised bump that the spring end rest against, I ran an additional 1.5 inches of thread up the rod.

I used a nut at the end of the thread so that the spring end now rests against this.

Not stock but it works

just rotate the lever. that's what I did on mine.

(file some teeth on the lever if necessary)
