My bike will start in neutral or any gear with the clutch pulled in... it stalls when you let the clutch out...as if you weren't giving enough throttle.
If the clutch plates were stuck, it would NOT start in gear with the clutch pulled in, without lurching forward.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Just a thought, have you tried putting the bike on the center-stand, starting it up, put it in gear, and letting the clutch lever out?

x2 but..

After some research, I guess I'm going to do an oil change with 20w50 oil...then let the bike warm up, and the rear wheel spin a bit(if I can get it off the ground, no center stand)...

Then I'll try to drive it again.

Anyone have thoughts?

So..

It rolls freely in neutral,
it will not roll freely in gear,
it will start in gear with the clutch lever pulled in,
it does not lurch when you start in gear,
it will shift into gear but stall when you try to ride off,
and there are no weird sounds except for a little rattling (normal I do believe)..

Have you tried adjusting the clutch yet? But I'm not too sure the clutch is the issue.

If the clutch were sticking (staying engaged) it would lurch when started in gear.
If the clutch were sticking (staying disengaged) it would not stall, the engine would simply rev or the clutch would slip.

So I would think it's internal (but no weird clunks, grinding, or other sounds), or it's a fuel or ignition issue.

So maybe jack up the rear and run it through all the gears. If it does, then it's most likely not an internal trans issue.

And regardless of the the clutch safety switch wiring, it should make no difference once the bike is started. It will not inhibit you from riding or cause stalling, it would only (possibly) cause starting issues. Though my wires have been disconnected for the last three months and it starts perfectly fine.

I'm telling you though, if you have a fuel starvation issue or weak spark, the bike will idle all day long (provided you have fuel in the tank) and everything will seem fine. But, when you try to ride off under load you'll get stalling and/ or sputtering. The only thing is, is that running through the gears with the rear tire of the ground doesn't necessarily rule this out as the rear wheel is spinning freely under no load. Just more food for thought :)

Just a thought.....pull yer plugs all out, put bike in gear, turn rear wheel by hand. If you can't turn it/and the engine, then you've got a mechanical problem. :-\

Yes, and if the rear wheel turns through all gears, maby the carbs are fooling you around...??
...if you got the ability to act...

Well I finally got the clutch opened completely up today. I can't do a lot of the tests you guys are suggesting b/c I had to cut the end off of my clutch cable to get it out... so since I'm this far along, I wanted to see if the plates were stuck together. Keep in mind I've never opened a clutch before...

But it looks like the plates were not stuck... when I pulled them out they fell apart easily enough, rotated around ok too...

Now I've got the mangled clutch nut to deal with and a new clutch cable that's too short, so I'm pretty frustrated. I ordered an OEM clutch cable...part # 22870-410-000... It's about 9 inches shorter than my old one and won't fit. I thought my bike had stock bars, but maybe I'm wrong.

So I've got to wait again, then I still have no idea what my problem is. I'm so frustrated I just want to set the bike on fire and walk away.

I might end up having to take it to a mechanic, which I hate to even think about. But the service manual isn't much help, I've got no friends with bikes to compare mine to, and no one I can get help from in person...

You guys here are great, but I think I need someone over my shoulder on this stuff. I don't even know if I'll be able to get the clutch adjusted properly once I button it back up.

So I'm pissed
