cb400f ignition coil
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:28:35 PM »
Anyone know of an aftermarket coil for a 1975 cb400f or a place i might search for one? The dealership claims the oem coils are discontinued.

Or, does anyone know what the output of the coils is for this bike. I'm assuming any 2 lead coil of the same output would be kosher.

You should be able to find a usable set on Ebay fairly easily/cheaply.

I tried ebay, but none for this particular bike. There are some "universal" coils on there but I'm not sure what output i need. I think it's 3 ohms. Or maybe 5. I'm not positive. I'm not even sure how critical it is.

Not really a matter of output. You need a "dual fire" coil with two plug leads. The primary should be 5 ohms, 3 ohms will burn points and also overload a 400F electrical system.
Dynatek (dynaonline.com) has good aftermarket coils, you need the DC8-1. You can get them from many places, I think z1enterprises.com has a good deal on them.

Great. Thanks for the info. Both coils for the price of one OEM coil. Nice. :D

You have to modify the stock coil mount posts slightly for Dynatek coils - a hacksaw and file job - but they will still work with stock coils afterward. There's a bit sticking up that the stock coil cores butt against whereas the Dynatek coils have a slightly longer core as I recall.
Get the Dynatek wire set too, you can still use the old plug caps if you want (the Dynatek ones are a different type and look odd if you're used to stock). Finding cable and the connectors for the coil is a pain, the Dyna cables give you everything you need. If you use the original resistor caps or get new NGK resistor caps, use copper core wire. With the Dynatek caps I would use the suppression core wire.
If you remove the stock coil wire plug caps and pour some hot water on the wires the sleeves will slide off and you can re-use them on your new wires. This preserves the plug numbers and adds some insulation value where the wires come against the frame or tank - always useful.

The honda 7.5, 10hp, and probably other outboard motors have a coil that is very similar, two plug wires. I always wondered if they substitute, the ones for outboards were readily  available last time I needed one.
