1st bike project
« on: March 10, 2010, 05:33:28 PM »
This is my first bike project. I am new member here but I have read these forums for a long time. I have wanted to build a cafe style bike for several years. Anyway now I am able to. I have gotten alot of inspriation from the build on this site. So i found a 1978 cb750. The good. It was all there. It ran. Had new tires. I will get into the bad as it comes up.I gave $1000 for the bike. It was snowing the day I went to get it. I drove it home. I took several pictures with my phone of my progress. Sorry for the image quality. I have had the bike going on four weeks now. This is my bike the day I got it and the look I am going after. I plan to do a complete motor out frame up next winter. However I really want to do some riding, so I am just gonna hit the high spots. lol

The first thing I did was strip the bike down. The exhaust pipes had holes in them from the soft springs and the bike bottoming out and rubbing the axle on the pipes. I picked up a set of clubman bars, I also got a set of vorex clipons. I decided to go with the clubmans. I was able to get the throttle to work flawless. However the clutch has been a different story. It really feel like #$%*. I called every bike shop in knoxville to have it shortened with no luck. wtf. To me this should be a basic procedure for a tech, but what do i know I work on cars for a living. anyway I have been looking online for a cable

I have looked at several tanks. There are so many looks out there. I wanted to have a steel or alloy tank. I just didnt want to pay for what i could find them for. lol. I figured I would go the tank dent route. i figured if I jacked it up to bad that i would just buy one, but if I could do it I would save aton of cash. I felt the same way about the seat. Here are some pics of my progress with the tank. What do you think so far?

Same goes for the seat pan. This is alot harder than it looks on tv. lol. I got the metal as round and flat as I could. Hopefully I could smooth it out with filler. That is my duct tape mockup.

Now the real thing. I have to say this was really a #$%*.

Yeah man, you're doing fine.  I'm not a knee-dent guy, but I'll admit your take on it is new and looks good.
Keep it up.

I am really happy with how the tank has turned out so far. Started filling last night. ordered some tail lights and turn signals for the rear this morning. I plan on frenching in the rear tail lights and putting the blinkers under the tail somehow. havent really decided how that is gonna work out. Will get some more pics on soon.

I think your bike is a 76,77.Silver engine and lace wheels are the dead give a way.I guess the 77,78 had motor issues, valve train mostly.I have the 78 with constar wheels and the black engine. The tank looks great.

Its a 1978. Been sanding on the tank and waiting on the tail lights to come in. Ordered a set of rear sets from a 900rr. Gonna weld on some brakets to make them work.
