DOHC starting problem!

So, first post.  Posting in open as it is a DOHC bike and I don't want to offend anyone  ::)

My story:

Bought a 1981 CB750 bike that was not well maintained (at best), and it ran but not well; figured it would give me a good opportunity to learn how to tune her up.  I've put quite a few hours into tuning it and getting all the pieces operational.  The latest problem was that it would increase idle as the engine warmed.  It was manageable when it idled at 3k, but I took a trip last week where the engine got real hot and I had to head back early, the engine had a 6k idle when I got home.  Although the idle was high, as soon as I she was going in second and third gear the engine revs were back down to 3k.

I figured that I had to check the carb boots for a leak.  Loosened the battery box, the air filter, and popped the carbs back an inch so that I could remove the rubber boots connecting the carbs to the engine.  I applied some silicon vacuum grease to attempt to correct any leaks as they weren't in good condition but had no apparent holes and were still somewhat malleable.  Put it all back together, and now she won't start (never had this problem before).  Charged the battery just to be sure, but still reluctant.  The engine doesn't turn over, I just hear the click of the ignition circuit, but nothing else.  So disappointed, I thought I would have had her fully functional tonight!

Suggestions?  Mistakes?  Please? ???

try replacing the starter relay and the intake boots to correct the high idle. I used to have the same high idle problem too.
