Some Newbie Questions
« on: August 10, 2010, 07:41:08 AM »
Hello All!

I am about to get my first CB750.  Been wanting to get one for a long time and now seems to be the time for everything to line up.

Anyway, it is 1979 CB750.  Now I realize it is a DOHC, but I have some questions regarding this model and frame and whether or not somethings are interchangeable.  It is mostly stock and I would like to convert it to a cafe style bike.

1.  It has the Mag style wheels currently and I would like to go to spokes, but I am not sure if the earlier model wheels can be mounted up?

2.  How do other items work as far as shocks, tank swaps, aftermarket tail options...I am thinking along these lines.  If the engine was changed in 1979, what frame changes were made and what limitations would I have in that regard.  Eventually I may be interested in going with a SOHC engine in that frame, but not sure what all I would be up against.

3.  Should I scrap the idea and look for a pre-79 machine?

4.  If has CR Smooth Bore carbs on it.  Is that a good thing?  Seems to be from what I have found.  They may need a little tweaking but it does run and has been on the street on a normal basis.

I guess I can start there.  I really appreciate any input you guys can give.  Thanks in advance and I hope these are not stupid questions.  I have a lot of experience on CBR's but not much on these older bikes.

I guess I should have mentioned that.  I am in Central Ohio.  I should get the bike on Friday if everything works out.  I am actually trading a quad for it.  So just need to see how things go, but seems very positive.

The wheels are black five spoke mags...don't know much about them other than that.  So I need to get it in my posession, but I am open to ideas or trades.  Just don't know what fits, what doesn't...all this is new to me.  Been looking around on CB750cafe.com for ideas, so let me know what your thoughts are.

Well... Welcome to the forum!

There are a couple of good forums... this one is the most informative and helpful in my opinion.   There are a lot of great people on this forum.  They'll help you a lot.  Get yourself a repair manual and start in... They can be challenging...but very fun to repair/rebuild/modify..

Carpy has some good stuff on his site ( CB750cafe.com)... Depending on what you want you bike to look like... stock/cafe/bob/chop...  there are a number of sites offering parts.  The 750 has gobs of stuff that bolt on/ easily modified.

I have a 750 with stock spoke rims and I'm looking for the mag rim look.
To some, the mag look is cool...other's it isn't as appealing.  if your CB750 has mags, then they are probably will fit any SOHC CB750 ( My guess)...I'm not sure about 650's, 550's, 500's..etc..

The mag's can be a much sought after item...  If you decide to sell...I'd be interested in what you would like for them...

Sounds good.  I won't even take posession until Friday, so I will get some ideas by then and figure out what to do.

Thanks for the info, really looking forward to getting on this.  Thinking about stripping it to the frame this winter and doing a powder coat and then frame up restore mod to cafe racer.  I just want it to look really sweet when she is finished.
