Mo-Lester bike-New Pics added 8-16-10
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:14:46 AM »
I call this 1977 CB550 the MoLester bike for a few reasons, first the obvious one, the wheels, then the "MO" comes from the project taking more time and way more money than it should have. I really feel like I've been molested by the bike, at least my wallet.

The bike came from here, another member had it. "Really nice", needs "finishing", yep needed starting, middling, swearing, hating, then finishing. First day home, started motor and clutch exploded, pressure plate bolts backed out. Fixed clutch, ran engine again to find a Stanley Steam engine smoked less, disassembled to find all exhaust valves bent over and all guides broken. Then it got a hone, new rings and rebuilt head. Carbs, yep, all redone, except they weren't. They got new press in jets and bowl gaskets with a good cleaning. It had pods, well, I replaced all the missing stock air box pieces all because I read too much from TwoTired ;D, the bike does run well! The engine leaked out of every seal, of course, all new seals including oil pump and sending unit. Forks puked out in back of truck but they were just done over, not. Rebuilt. Tapered bearings, new roller bearing kit for swing arm. Charging system did not function. All cables were frayed. Raask sets from here on the classifieds. Lester wheels stripped and repainted/polished. New tubes, tires. New side covers, Benjie seat pan, stock tank, all painted black. Mini turn sigs. Everything went out to powder coat. I don't do alot of pictures because I'm a slob and I'd have to clean up first. I work like a Tazmanian Devil stuff flying everywhere, so no real build thread. I was also building my big bore motor for my 76 550 and a complete new build on a CB450 and put my street car back together. There is alot I did to this bike, more than I thought I would have to, but heck thats the story of my life.

I'd like to thank the members here who sold me the parts I needed ; Smack, MrOzz, DKB and to Traveler for keeping me inspired to finish this Lester wheeled machine.

CB,
Very nice thanks for the post.

I recently picked up a 74 750 and so far have been leaning toward a resto-mod. I love the look of your bike. Mine came from PO with Lesters... Didn't know what I had until I started poking around here.

I love my Orange... but the black is looking very good....

Question... (Sorry if I missed it in your post...)

Did you leave the front brakes stock? Rear Brakes?

Enough of a stcok look but with the mods that make it nice... You are swaying my decision sir!
Thanks,
Phil

Yes, stock front brakes but rebuilt caliper. Rear brakes stock drum. They work well. I'm planning to have the front rotor drilled after this riding season is over.

I just did some new tank badges in silver, I think it will be a better match than the gold. I'll get some nice pics this weekend.

Looks GREAT!

I didn't know about this build.  The stock airbox idea was the best move.

well....will you keep her, or try to sell?  May be impossible to make any money on a 550.

Joe, I have to keep her, its like one of my kids now. My intentions were to give the bike to my niece, she rides but doesn't own a bike. Now its kinda weird I named the bike MoLester.

I don't think I could ever make any money at this, let alone recover what was spent. We just have to love them like the special pieces they are, and don't ever tell our spouses what we spend.

I want lesters for my build sooooo bad. Did they make lesters for the 550 or are they for a cb750 with a drum brake? How much lighter then a stock wheel are they?

Not sure if they are 750 or not, they use a 750 type cush drive and drum. They fit like a stock wheel otherwise. They're not too much lighter, although I didn't weight them, I held the bare Lesters up to the buffing wheel for a couple hours, they aren't way lighter may be 2-3 lbs if I had to estimate.

Since I did some cross referencing when I got my Lesters, allow me to pass some info concerning them.

rear wheel.  They are CB750 instead of 550.  Order the All Balls rear wheel bearing KIT, and you will receive 3 bearings, and a seal.  CB 750 wheels have an additional bearing in the cush drive piece.

When fitting on to a CB550, you will need the CB750 cush drive and CB750 wheel spacer FOR THAT SIDE ONLY.  The brake plate for a CB550 and CB750 are interchangeable, and the wheel spacer for that side, the brake side, for a 550 works perfect.

Also keep in mind 550 rear sprockets don't work.  you have to use a CB750 rear sprocket.  This is where it gets tricky.....due to gearing requirements, you must get a CB750 sprocket with the correct amount of teeth to work on a 550 setup (37 teeth for a 550).  I bought my sprocket through SPROCKET SPECIALISTS.  It's an alloy piece, and really nice.

Front wheel.  For a single disc setup...everything works fine except for 2 items.

Where the speedo drive fits on to the wheel, 2 notches have to be carefully made into the wheel....basically they are the flats.  Then the chrome beauty ring that fits over the bottom part of the drive and is bolted to the wheel.....won't work....have to skip it, and use washers under the bolts to take up the gap.  No worries as the top half of the speedo drive fits over it just fine and the axle, when tightened down holds it all together.

If confused, let me know and I'll try to get a pic.

LESTERS are an EXPENSIVE option.  Finding 18" rear wheels is VERY difficult, as 16" rear wheels were all the rage in the 70's when these wheels came out.

Sorry for the hijack....just wanted to pass some related info on.

Great write up joe.. Could you edit it and mention the number of teeth to order on the sprocket for those that have not read your build thread?

Done.

37 tooth rear sprocket is stock for a 550.  Using a stock 750 sprocket has too many teeth, and will be too low geared for the motor and transmission.
