Oil coming out of tach drive.....
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:29:33 PM »
Been trying to find the phantom oil leak.  Looks as though it's coming from where the tach cable mates up to the valve cover.  Anyone ever experience this?  Is there a remedy?

Do I have to pick one up from the Honda shop, or is it something I can get at the hardware store?

Or do the cheap arse fix and just splooge some sealant around the end of the cable housing and poke it back into the rocker cover, making sure there's a fine bead of sealant all the way around it. I know I should do it properly, but hey, it works! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

That's it mate, I've been doing that trick for the last 30-odd years that I've owned CB750's, and it works fine. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I think I remember reading that you could put a tach seal in from a early DOHC Honda 4 and that it would seal/last a little better than the "correct" one since it was slightly larger?

Just did this last week, plus a little around the base of the bolt head and outer mating area. Used the black stuff. Clean as a whistle!!

That's it mate, and I made my own seal for a Suzuki GS1000E a year ago, my Suzuki dealer didn't have one in stock (why was I surprised?) but I had a sheet of 4mm thick rubber and so I just cut my own seat with a couple of round gasket punches, the sealant trick doesn't work on this model, but my cheap-arse seal works like a dream! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Just tried Terry's McGyver trick.  Weather is too nice to wait around for oil seal to show up in the mail  :D  Will see how it holds up.  Thanks!

Sealant at the tach drive worked like a charm!  Any good McGyver tricks for fixing a leaky head gasket??? ;D

Ha ha, nah, sorry mate, the "cheap arse" approach would be just to re-torque the head and re-seal the little rubber pucks under the rockers, but really, by the time you've gone to that extent you may as well go the whole hog and replace the head gasket and all the top end seals.

There is a McGyver trick though, the manual tells you to torque the head to 15 ft lbs, (from memory) if you follow the instructions, a year or two down the track, it'll leak again. Torque it down in 4 ft lb increments to 16 ft lbs, then in 2 ft lbs increments to 20 ft lbs. Make sure all the threads are clean and lightly oiled before you start torqueing it down.

Leave it overnight, then in the morning, loosen all the nuts off again and re-torque it in the same manner described above, and it won't leak. Ever. Make sure you piut a little sealant around the little rubber pucks too, quite often oil leaking from them is misdiagnosed as a leaking head gasket. Cheers, Terry. ;D
