Neat Product for CBs
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:02:12 AM »
When I don't have any real projects to work on I hunt for them.  I have been attempting to lower the electrical consumption of my CB500.  I have a solid state regulator, LED directional signals, 35 W h4 headlight bulb and now a really bright and effective LED 1157 bulb for the tail.  As I was looking for ideas on the superbrightled.com web site I found a bulb specifically designed for motorcycle tail lights.  It consists of a single 1157 bulb with 9 red LEDs facing out and 6 white LEDs arranged radially around the plug.  The white lights illuminate the licence plate! It would seem that this bulb was designed specifically for our old machines. Well I got my order today.  The red lights are much brighter than I expected (based on earlier 1157 bulbs I have looked at) and the plate illumination was perfect.  I just did not want to keep this product a secret and only $13.00.

Could you post a direct link to the product you are talking about?

Does the electrical require any modification to make this work on our old bikes or is it plug and go?

Wow, they finally made a good one huh?  Thanks for the info, good find.  I've known about that website for a while but have never placed an order, how fast was their shipping?

Njcafe84 if it's an 1157 it's probably plug and play.

Shipping is pretty quick but I'm only a state away.

I have had good success so far with running the front blinker LED's and their flasher.
I kept the rear blinkers original so it can see a normal load.

I saw that taillight but I'm not sure it work work for my current non-stock light.

Dukie...any mods or additions to the stock harness to get these to funciton properly?
i'm using a electronic flasher module right now with the stock bulbs.

Nope, just kept my rear incandecent bulbs in so the flasher unit saw a large enough load to operate properly.
With LED's in the front and rear the flasher wasn't seeing enough load so all the signals flashed.
The rears only work when I use the signals so no big wattage loss there.

I am gonna order one tonight. What did you use for the front signals/running lights?

I ordered the amber 30 LED 1157 wide dispersion. It will be less bright than an incandescent 1157 but it is still visible for day time use so I'm OK with it.

Why not get an electronic flasher at an auto parts store [get same number of connectors] and run LEDs on both ends? Around $10 and works great!

I have the elec. flasher as I tried LEDs in all amber lights and tail light. They were not as bright as the orig bulbs so I returned 'em. I'd like to find very bright, reasonable priced LEDs. May try these guys.

Thanks

They said their flasher works with LED's out of the box and it was the same price or a little cheaper so I bought it along with the other lights.

Yeah, they are not as bright as the regular bulbs but are still visible at daytime so I was OK with that.

Some people have said their high power ones were more bright than stock lights but I wasn't sure if they would work properly in my blinkers. Maybe someon else could chime in on that one.

Well it got dark so I could get a picture of the tail light.  It really is a bit more red than the photo shows.
