Has anyone "skipped" a cam chain on a CB450?
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:37:03 PM »
The timing marks on the camshafts on my k5 cb450 aren't lining up with their index marks at LT on the left cylinder compression stroke. The chain is new and I would rather not break it. The reason the cams are off is an error on my part when I was installing the new chain.
I asked at the Honda Twins forum if you could loosen the chain enough to line up the marks. 66Sprint mentioned that it is possible to "SKIP" the chain. Does anyone know how to do that?

Wow, I just looked at the parts fiche and that might be a tough one! It appears as though cam chain sprocket and cam shaft are all one piece. (the cam sprocket bolts to the camshaft on my CB500 sohc) I don't see how you could remove the chain without stretching or damaging it, but I am far from an expert. I know HondaMan is a fan of these bikes, if it can be done, he would know how. Check the FAQ section for the "thoughts of Hondaman" thread. There is some DOHC info there. Again I'm no expert, but why is only the left side off the mark?!? One chain runs both shafts simultaneously so both L and R should be "off" by the same amount. Maybe the shafts are 180'd? or reversed? Just a thought...

BTW, you mentioned a hondatwins forum. Has anyone noticed how inferior most other forums are? It might take some searching but eveything I need to know is usually found right here....regardless of make. Good luck

I got my answer but thanks anyhow. The cams are off the same distance. The left I was referring to was the position of the piston in the left cylinder. It was a mistake that I made when I replaced the pistons and the cam chain. I got it worked out though.
If you ever need info on Honda twins you should check out http://www.hondatwins.net/forum. Definitely not an inferior site. There is a lot of knowledge there. I wouldn't be surprised that many members of this site are also members of that site. I have been a member of both for a few years. Both great sites with a lot of great people.
I visit this forum for my sohc fours and the other for my twins.
