Quick wheel bearing question
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:02:56 AM »
Hey guys,
I'm going to replace the wheel bearings on my 78 750.
How do I go about removing the old ones from the rear wheel? It looks like a tap ring on top with slots there, but before I go after it with a hammer and flat screwdriver, Just thought I'd ask to be sure.

Thanks!

The retainer ring it threaded.  The slots you see are so you can grab it with a pin wrench.  Typically, these retainer rings are spikes or dimpled to keep them from vibrating loose.

Before hitting/ruining the retainer ring with a hammer and drift, drill out the dimples if they are there (1/8 in drill, maybe an 1/8 in deep) then back the ring out with a pin wrench.  If you don't have a pin wrench, you can make one with a piece of flat steel and a couple small bolts.

Do a search on this site for ideas on how to remove the bearing retainer ring.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

If you do a search, you will find several threads on making the tools to remove the ring and the bearings.
