Replacement solonoid wiring & hookup
« on: August 12, 2010, 07:22:46 AM »
Does it matter which post of the solenoid gets connected to either the battery positive or battery negative?  I bought a new one from Dennis Kirk and when I position them in the same position, the yellow/red wire is on the left hand side of the OEM starter and on the right side of the DK solenoid.  The OEM solenoid has a black wire on the right side while the DK solenoid has a green/red wire on its opposite side from the yellow/red.  On the DK solenoid, I assume (obviously) the yellow/red gets connected to the yellow/red on the bike wiring system while the other (the green/red) gets connected to the bikes black connector.  Correct amundo??  Wondering why the “other” wire is not color matched??

The bike is a 1975 750K5 and the DK solenoid # is 21-0784.  Rick’s #65-101.

The replacement is slightly bigger in circumference and it widens up the bikes attaching bracket so I may need longer bolts to attach the bracket to the frame.  The new solenoid is pictured on the “right.”

Thanks for the help  8)

No it does not matter the small wires are just a coil it does not care the large wires are just a set of heavy duty contacts the do not care either.

10-4 thanks.  I'm putting it in today and hope that is (was) my problem.

I put a replacement solenoid on my K1 and the connectors were oppsite the connectors from the wiring harness.  I pluged the Y/R wire into the G/R and the G/R to the Y/R wire.  That totally freaked me out.  Why would they use the correct color wires and switch the connectors?  I bet some worker in Taiwan just likes messing with people.  Works fine either way it is connected.

Lowmilage.... the solenoid post connectors get ONLY the battery + (positive) wire and the starter + wire. The battery - (negative) connects to the bike frame only..... the small wires are not sensitive as to which wire they mate with and are a different color because the K6 and later bikes had a different safety circuit
( the wiring that stops you from trying to start the bike in gear ).
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

It was the solonoid.  The bike now electric starts  ;D.  Connector wires on the solonoid were wired wrong but apparently that doesn't matter - for instance, Y/R on the solonoid is a female connector and the Y/R on the bike wiring harness is also a female.  Kinda felt funnly wiring the Y/R to the different color wire.
