CB750 oil pan help
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:12:08 AM »
I am in the process of getting a 1978 CB750 back on the road for a friend of mine. He hasn't ridden it in 12 years and last week we got the bike to run again from its slumber. Unfortunately, the oil pan was cracked badly, enough that a chunk fell off the pan with the drain plug falling out as well.

I am seeking a new oil pan. On eBay I have found several 1978 oil pans but some say HM31 and HM41. Others say "Will fit 1969-1979" but I am not sure of this. What is the difference between them? We don't want to buy the wrong one.

Thank you.

The later model oil pans had more pronounced cooling fins on them. They all fit the bottom case of 69-78 SOHCs.

Looking at the micro-fiche diagrams, all the oil pans had the same part #, but I have seen different versions. There is even a deep sump oil pan, if you can find one.

Anyone know where to find one of these? Deep sump oil pan?

Thanks :)

I would think you could have a machine shop make a spacer. But what about the pickup?

That might be a god idea :) :)Just want to add extra oil capacity, does not mater if the pickup stays where it is. Guess the extra oil in pan will be mixed with the rest and keep up the quality??

Lowering the pan will just put more oil in the sump which is supposed to be dry, giving lots of slosh and friction losses unless the pickup is lowered as well then i just dont see the point.

Bigger fins will help cool the oil as the alloy will transfer more heat away

bryanj You are correct .don't know why he would want a deep sump.I would rather have a oil cooler.the sloshing and foaming is why I ask about pickup

After thinking a little I wonder if this deep pan just has longer fins making it appear deeper that would be nice.
