Does anyone know a crap load about Windows 7?
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:50:08 PM »
There is something going on with my documents in Windows 7. I can't open anything in my Libraries folder. I can open files in Downloads in my Favorites folder or if I create a new file I can open that but nothing else. Some of the folders and files now have a lock icon over them but not all of them. When I try to open a pdf file or a jpeg or a word document I get an error message that the file is damaged or not supported.
I haven't downloaded anything lately and I am still logged on as administrator. I have access to all the folders they just wont open correctly.
I have a ton of pdf service manuals, photos, word documents and other stuff I need to rescue.
Has anyone experienced this or does anyone know how and if it can be fixed.

dunno if this helps.... right click the folder go down to share an then  down to share with home group..... as far as the pdfs and stuff... right click also and go to open with and a drop down box should open go to choose default program. and pick somthing u are sure  it works with.... (this can be done indefinatly) chances are u downloaded a program that took over all of these files as a default program.... if u watch it usually has a box checked at the last stage of an install asking if you would like it to be the default program or something like that

those were my first guesses as well but all of that is correct. everything opens with the right default program and all my libraries are shared with the homegroup and I also have ownership of all the folders and files that wont open.

A few other things that I can think of is to have a look through the MS Help & Support section for W7 which can be pain or check out some W7 forums and you might pick some answers up there.

Whether a Roll Back fixes the problem I'm not sure.
It might be worth a try.
It will be fixable but it's just going through the BS first to pin the cause and it may well be some security setting that needs to be changed so that you can access the data.

Is there anything you installed or changed on the comp or OS lately? How long has the issue been occurring?

I haven't installed or downloaded anything recently other than windows and vaio updates. I just happened last night and none of the files I have created since have been corrupted.

It almost sounds like a security error as in the security of certain files got changed but wrong error message.

What you might be able to do is download 7zip and use it to extract the files from the corrupted containers. Now I am not sure it works with pdf and jpeg but I know docx files can be unzipped like that and the contents pulled out which can then be put into a new word document.

I think you're right. Its got to be some kind of permissions or security error. I found my back ups so I am just going to recreate the folder. I am still curious to know what happened. I don't see how I could have accidentally changed ownership or access permission to that folder. Whatever. Thanks for everyones suggestions.

You most likely did not, it was probably some sort of profile error.

there hasn't been any security warnings. i don't know anything about viruses but it only happened in my documents library and it hasn't happened since. once i noticed it though i shut off my internet connection and restarted my laptop.
