76 CB750K - 4 Inner Cylinder Bolts... Necessary?
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:34:32 AM »
So close to having the top end buttoned up, then I snapped one of these bolts off... #$%*.

My question is, how necessary are these? Can I just tighten up the other three and close it up, or do I have to try and extract the broken bolt and replace it? Someone on my build thread said those are just there to slowly tighten down the cylinder before tightening the top nuts, but I've already torqued the top down... any suggestions?

One good thing is it looks like that bolt snapped pretty high up on the thread column. There may be enough sticking out if and when the head is removed to get it out fairly easily. Might work OK as is but you will always have that in the back of your mind.Lets see what an engine builder says.

The way these sum#$%*es have a tendency to leak oil I'd remove leftovers and replace the bolt.

You know the answer.

Replace the bolt.  Either now or later.

Yes, you need it. Were you using a torque wrench? Dan

Yeah, I was. I couldn't find the torque specs anywhere so I used 15 ft/lb, the same as the head nuts. I'm going to see if I can get a drill and extractor down there and twist it out of there. I really don't want to have to take the whole top end apart again!

Any idea what I should be torqueing (sp?) them to? Or just until they're "snug"?

They're only 6mm, shoudn't be any more than probably 6 or 7 ft/bs.
