Topic: Launched my baffles out the back today....

I have one of those JC Whitney special type exhausts (unsure of actual lineage) and today at about 5k RPM I launched the sucker out the back. I didn't realize that's why it got loud (I thought something else went) until I could come back later and get the baffles.

So - I don't know if I got it all? I only have this 8 inch long piece that consists of a giant washer with a hole for a set screw and a pair of tubes welded together? They're about six inches long. There may be more in there but I didn't have time to look while at work.

Is it 4 into 1.  4 into 2   if 4 \1 put back and see if it sounds the same if  4\2 see if it sounds same as other one. Best I can tell you from info you gave.

Thanks for the reply bollingball. I hammered the part I found back into shape and replaced it with a cotter pin. (I'll have to fix that with some other hardware later.) Sounds the same to me!

HA! It was actually. I didn't really get my hearing back for about a day though...

Back in the 70s I had a similar experience - had a set of Hm300s on my K2, and was proddy racing, so needed to put some baffles in to pass scrutineering - had a set of Hm341 end cones, so with a bit of effort late the night before the races banged them into the ends of the pipes (they were a very tight fit), and of course hadn't lined up the holes to put the bolt in. So got through scrutineering, out on to the track and first race - mate following me through the esses oh his CB, hot on my tail, when I noticed, as I twisted the throttle to the stop as I exited the last turn, that the exhaust note suddenly changed.
He passed me a bit later and shook his fist at me - WTF - ended the race, and back to the pits. He came up to me wetting himself laughing - one of the baffles had shot out at great speed and just missed his helmet..... hahaha, we went for a walk after the racing and found it in the grass trackside.
Could have been a different story if it had hit him!

I've lost one of the mufflers on the 350 before. My Dad bought some new mufflers from Jc Whitey back in the 80s as the originals rusted out. These ones look basically the same as stock except for the fact there loud as hell basically straight pipes with a little baffling in them.

I was riding on a busy street in town a few years back and noticed the exhaust tone changed a little bit and didn't think much about it it was still the same loudness. Got to my friends looked down and noticed my whole muffler was gone! Retraced my steps and sure enough 2 miles away was my muffler laying on the side of the road I'm surprised it didn't get ran over, I road home with it on my lap with flames shooting out the one pipe. I was getting awfully nervous as my pant leg was flapping right next to it! . Muffler just had a few tiny knicks on it and is still used today. But, needless to say  I check to make sure its tight everyone in a while now!

HA! I told a friend about the baffle and he related a racing story much like pete.

Here's a cage story about that:

My parents gave this woman a car once. It was a 1983 caprice station wagon (and also happened to be the only car the kids could drive... but whatever) and it had run like a top for 150000 miles. SO - they give this woman the car and she calls up two days later. "OH NO! The car won't start! I don't know what to do!" So my mom told me to go over there with my friend and sort it out. WE get over and the car is missing it's entire exhaust after the cat, missing the air cleaner, and a whole bunch of other stuff is wrong. It's got either a floating valve or a burnt valve because you can hear it firing back into the intake, and numerous other things. BLUE FIRE was shooting alternately out of the tailpipe and intake. It was a mess. Hours later we sorted the worst out. Readjusted the ONE lifter that was all messed up? (they don't do that on their own...) Fitted a $30 tailpipe and muffler, and stuck a junkyard air cleaner on it. Yay. ONE WEEK LATER she calls back. "OH NO! The car won't start!" GREAT we think. Drive over there - WHOLE CAR was incinerated. BURNT TO THE GROUND. Of course it wouldn't start! It was burnt up! She also managed to torch the second car they gave her too. I think it was arson - because she was NUTS. A week later we came over to see how she was doing and she was throwing all the food out of the fridge onto the floor because jesus told her the devil was in the food. Needless to say we don't talk to her anymore.
