CB400F Valve Lash
« on: February 22, 2006, 06:40:18 AM »
This weekend I was going to set the valves on my 400F, but I realized that I do not have the right tools.  On my old 500K all I needed was a 10mm wrench and a flat screwdriver.  The 400F seems to take a 9mm wrench and some sort of tiny square driver?  I don't know how to describe this drive well enough to find the right tool without taking the tappet out of hte engine, and I hate to do that.  Can anyone tell me what this tool is or where to get one?

There's a Honda tool for that, but I don't have one. I use a combination wrech on the locknut and a pair of needlenose pliers to hold while tightening. It might take a couple of tries but you can get it.

It’s made from steel sheet about 2.5mm thick, cut, bent, drilled and filed and it works great!

Is there a commercially available tool that does this task?  For that matter, does anyone know the part number for the Honda tool?  I'm not opposed to seeing if I can get one.  I hate the idea of possibly rounding these tiny tappet adjusters off using alternate methods.

There are, as i remember, three diferent valves tools and i think you can get all of them from Dennis Kirk
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I always just used needle nose pliers like Jay B said.  You don't have to apply much force to the tappet adjuster to hold it in place while tightening the lock-nut, so rounding it off isn't much of a worry.
