I started off building up Harleys and had a great time doing it but wanted something different.  I stumbled across SOHC4 and another website dedicated to CB's and vintage Honda rebuilds and was hooked.  The next day I started looking for a CB to play around with.  I found a cb400twin (hawk) not far from where I live and went up and purchased it for $500.  I didn't know how undesirable and difficult the hawks were to rebuild until I was half way into it.  During the completion of my 400t I fell in love with the cb750 / 500 / 550's.  The search was on!

I found a 1977 cb750f in Eugene, OR (510 mile round trip) bought it based on the pictures for $800 and took off the next day to retreve it.  My lack of schooling on cb's shines again by purchasing a F2 due to head issues and less available parts.  ::) But I had my 750 and didn't pay some of the crazy prices people are asking for old rusty cb's in the Seattle area.  The bike looked great from 10 feet, but was in a desperate need of love.

The next day I went to work.  I had a picture in my head of how I wanted the 750f to look when I was finished but most important to me was to make a solid / safe / updated mechanically sound bike.  I completely rebuilt this bike down to re plating every bolt.  I did all the work myself in my garage with the exception of the powdercoat work.  I tried to stick with NOS Honda parts where I could but were updating would improve the quality or safety of the bike I would upgrade.

Some highlights.
Engine  JE 836 pistons designed for the F2, Webcam 41 billet cam, new highflow valves, heavy duty springs, guides and retainers.  All new bearings, Heavy Duty cylinder bolts, cam and primary chain.  Dyna ignition and coils, CR 29 carbs, HD clutch springs.  Powder coated engine covers, updated wiring harness with blade fusebox and new strator(the previous one was toast) Joker machine starter cover, TAS oil pressure gauge.

Brakes Brakes have been taken apart, blasted and powdercoated, new SS pistons, black covered braided lines and all new rubber pieces.  Rotors drilled

Other Bits internally wired clubmans, led lights, every bolt re surfaced, refinished gauges, Progressive suspension front and rear, Tarozzi fork brace, TTR400 billet chain adjusters, New sprockets front and rear, bronze swing arm bushings, tapered steering bearings, sealed wheel bearings, older modle ignition switch with relocated warning lights, Joker machine chain adjust bolts/oil drain plug/clutch cover.  Modified stock fender.

I sold a bunch of old Harley parts and a couple guitars to help finance the build.

One of the toughest months yet, for sure!

'Tweakin', had to give the nod to you, great job and started with an 'F'.  In the end, I prefer the stock route I'm going with mine, but the attention to detail on every aspect of your build was awesome!

Dang, Tweakin comes out swingin' with a nice write-up!  Well, here goes...

After about 8 years without a motorcycle, I got the approval to do a bike project.  I knew I wanted to do a Cafe style, but I didn't know where to start.  My internet research led me to the Inspiration Gallery on this forum, and I instantly knew what I needed to do.  Instead of looking for "a bike", I started looking for a SOHC4.  I started doing all sorts of research on them and bought several books on them before even owning one.  I even have a spreadsheet created that lists the years each CB model was available that was color coded by twin vs. 4 and SOHC vs. DOHC and K vs. F to help me decide which years/models to look for.

In the end, I found this pretty nice 1976 CB550K about an hour away on Craigslist.  The same day we went to get the bike, we picked up a new pet dog from the animal shelter in the town where the bike was located.  Not having been on a bike in 8 years, I wanted to ride the back roads home.  I actually had to stop at a cycle shop to buy a helmet before going back for the bike.  However, the new dog started throwing-up in the backseat of my wife's car and she insisted on taking the freeway home since it was shorter.  Needless to say, I was more than a bit intimiated by hopping back on a bike and doing an hour on the freeway first thing.  To top it off, I ran out of gas on the way home.
Here's what I had, once I did get home.

I had the color scheme, look, and wheels figured out before I had the bike.  I knew I wanted comstars on both ends but with dual disks up front and the large diameter comstar in the back. So I bought a junkyard '81 CB650C front-end and '82 CB450T rear wheel.

Then I started mocking-up the build with a couple of different tank options and seat configurations.

Then, construction of the seat in metal began plus shortening the fork tubes, mounting the XS750 tank and installing the Benjie's headlight bucket.  The new seat was built on the base of a scrap CB550k seat and the hinges still function.  The plastic document holder under the seat is now a door that opens up into the cavity in the top of the seat, and I store my documents, gloves, tools, and rags in the seat.

This is actually the saddest part of my build.  My friend who helped me do the seat was my son's elementary school teacher's husband.  He welded for a living, and had a CB350 sitting in his office.  Last Thanksgiving (Nov.'09), what he thought was a sore back was diagnosed as kidney cancer.  This April I attended his funeral.  He was only 28.  That's Mike in this photo. Great guy...R.I.P.

Finished metal work.

Next, total deconstruction.

Meanwhile, a big bore kit installed by BoreTech.  Once the cylinders were back, the engine was assembled and painted,

the frame, swingarm and license plate holder were powdercoated,

and everything that could be polished, was polished.

The body parts were sent to another buddy who did painting in his garage at home.  He's since started up his own company and uses my car and bike parts on his website as promotion.

Finally, reconstruciton.

Yoga mat material was layered up and glued together to build the seat cushion.

CB650 calipers were rebuilt & painted

CB450T rear wheel was bored out for 20mm axle and 20MM ID bearings were pressed in

My own Rollie Free getting ready for another high-speed pass...

And finally, after the exhaust was installed.

A skull theme was carried across the bike.  They are on the grips, in the headlight and the taillight.

And, that's it. It fired up on the first push of the button.  I about fell over with shock.

During this build, I went from no motorcycles, to one motorcycle, to getting my wife to pass her cycle test, to a peak of 9 bikes for the family in the spring of this year.
I feel pretty proud to have my first build considered worthy of competing for this, and I can really say that it wouldn't have happened without the knowledge and inspiration I've found here.  Thanks.

Nice!!!!!!  I love these write ups.

Great job on the bike!  Interesting, I thought it was a maroon, boy was I wrong.  The color of the bottom coat and the flames give the outer color a look of a different color on the outside.  I don't know jack about paint so forgive if it sounds like I don't know what I am talking about, lol.

I don't have pics from the build to show you what I did, so I will have to give you some of the details. I found this bike in the want adds mag, located near Boston. It listed the bike as having several chromed parts, including the fork legs and engine covers. When I went to look at it the owner produced a note book as the bike had been owned by the same person sense new in 1977. This guy had every receipt, and every thing he ever did to the bike over the course of 30yrs, it was like the antiques road show.
When the bike was new the owner was young, he had an 836 kit done and then an  RC Cobra engine build done after that, then he bought a stock engine and sold the Cobra in later years. When I got the bike he had fallen out of love with it and had bought a new GSXR1000 for his 60th birthday.

I started this build because I always wanted a Café Racer. The first thing I did was draw out what I wanted and did a bit of research on the website Satanic Mechanic, that has lots of pics of Café or Race style CB750s from back in the 70s. These bikes had one thing in common that I really like the look of and that was a hidden oil tank, one of the designs I liked was the Bimota H1 and the other was also Italian by Giuliano Segoni. So I started looking for help on building the tank I wanted, and I found a guy near Boston that makes chopper tanks and frames for all kinds of stuff including CB750s ( www.tanksbytigman.com ) he made this tank you see on my bike to my exact design. The next thing I wanted to do is hide the battery and electronics, like Benjie at BCR had done, so I needed the seat to be big enough to do that, so I chose the Kawi style race seat you see on my bike. I also wanted it to have proper clip-on's and a top triple that looked race style and found other suppliers for those part including the rear sets that had to be fitted to the bike by welding on a flange. Well when I thought I was all done and the bike started looking good, I noticed it did not run as good as it looked, so I save up and bought some CR29 carbs, however it still did not run that well. So I came to this forum and started to watch folks talk about engine stuff and found out that Mike Rieck lived very close to me. I brought the bike over to show Mike, and he was very nice to tell me , my  engine was junk!!! Hahaha, it was and one or two of the forged rods in it had been bent. So I gave the engine to Mike and he did a full rebuild and an 836kit on it. I run the dual oil filters that came with the bike and the CR29s and the bike runs nice, it really does. This was my first build and I thought it would be my last, but I an getting ready to do a new project. I am not a competitive  person and did not do this to impress anyone. I built this because I love bikes and I don't care if you like it or not. Thanks again

Matt

Wow, tough acts to follow!  I'd better give it a go before the wife goes into labor, she was due yesterday  ;D

Like many of you, I spend coffee time with my laptop and CL, which is how I found this "barn fresh
beauty".  She was in sad shape, but still had the 1976 tag from when she was parked. The little bike was unmolested,
and with the original owner. Having put my last few bikes together from pieces in baskets and boxes, a bike in one
piece had a lot of appeal.

The bike doesn't have any bells or whistles, I just wanted a good rider.  It has just been cleaned up and made mechanically sound.
The brakes were gummed up, so soaked everything in denatured alcohol, went through the MC and caliper, put on SS braided lines.

the carbs were varnished over, the tank had a little "patina", the chain and cables were frozen.
Even with all the time spent dormant, it took surprisingly little to get the motor to fire up.  These old Hondas are amazing that way.

The rims and spokes were were far gone, had to lace up some new:

My wife picked the colors, and it is her bike for the most part.  I painted the outside with POR15 rust encapsulator, then etch primer, then epoxy prime, then silver base, candy jade, and some gold pinstripe.  Wetsanded the whole thing and then hit it with clear.

I made a video riding up and down the street for youtube. The intention was to sell the bike, but my wife
has since changed my mind.
