RH starter switch CB750F 1976
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:30:27 PM »
My starter switch is giving me grief. How to replace this complete RH switch? Where to find one and tips?

My switch imploded into several pieces so I picked up a new right hand control from www.babbittsonline for $95.  The individual switch is not available.  A used one is a waste of time as it too will fail in time.  You will need to remove the gas tank and disconnect the throttle cables from the carb linkage.  The electrical connections are in the junction box on the frame above the headers.  I attached a string to the old wires in the handlebar as I pulled them out and used it to pull the wires of the new control into place.

I was able to fit a miniature pushbutton switch into the stock switch location without too much trouble since the stock one was in 50 or so pieces.
You can probably get one that will fit from Radio Shack.  You need a SPDT "MOMENTARY" pushbutton.  It doesn't look like the factory original by any means, but on the bright side, it's cheap and easy to do.

I bought a selection of little switches to replace the original bits of plastic dust and such I found in the housing.
There's not much room.
No SPDT switch rated for the headlight current I could find would fit. No decent quality switch of any type I could find would fit. I got an Asian made el-cheapo radio Shack or equivalent SPST switch with open spring metal parts in back, quite small and rated OK for the solenoid current. It fit in the housing with no mods, the threaded part fit nicely in the button hole with just enough thread sticking out for the nut to fit. I connected the headlight to bypass the old shutoff-while-starting function and have seen no difference for its loss. This has worked for many years. Recently I learned that the button can pull out. After finding the button and asking my son not to pull it out again, it continues to work fine.

Sorry to bump a dusty thread... Bodi - to bypass the shutoff-while-starting function, which wires did you jump?  I searched around and read that they are in the headlight bucket... what did you do?
Thanks,
Mac

Well I just disconnected the wire to the starter relay for now and am kick-starting.
My buddy will be looking into a real fix in September.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the switch assembly or the starter button.

Regarding the starter button, you can buy new ones from:

Honda:  p/n 35317-001-310, if you lost your spring, I don't have that part number.

and

PartsNmore:

https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb750_sohc&category=electrical

scroll down 'til you get to the starter button.  It comes with the spring.

Refer back to my earlier post.  It is an exact replacement for the right hand control with the exception of the color of the kill switch button. I just swapped the red button off the old one.

Would you educate me on why it won't work?

I"m not familiar withe Fs.  But isn't the failure usually due the button disintegrating or the wire breaking near the solder joint or the solder joint itself near where the button contacts.  I can't belive that Honda would completely redesign a simple push contact switch, but, hey, what do I know?  Is the button the wrong size or shape?

I have CB750K4 and my button disintegrated.  Now I need a button and spring.

The later bikes have a more complicated button where the power to the headlight is disconnected before the power is transfered to the solenoid wire

Early ones one wire and button grounds the wire to the bars

Later ones three wires and button sends power to the solenoid

The 75/76 F switch has a button that is enclosed in a little plastic box that usually breaks, it's not the button that is the problem.

Thanks for the info.  Now I know a very little bit more.  I didn't realize there was that much difference.

Yeah, one of those "improvements" no doubt  ::)

I guess it could be called an improvement.  I had a 1976 Kawasaki KZ900.  The headlight stayed on all the time.  If the battery was low, it couldn't start because a lot of the electrical power went to the lighting.
